I didnt mean to talk badly about poly, im sure its a decent school. I just cant see any reason to go there when you can go to Stony Brook, Buffalo or Binghamton instead for 7x less, the same holds for NYIT. I mean you can live at the suny schools, go to school and get a nice car all on the same amount of money as you would pay at polytech maybe even less.

It does, but it and all the other Cuny schools are like HS all over again.

member, that is a very fair comment about SUNY alternatives. Only issue is how far from NYC the OP is willing to go, I got the impression he wanted to be right in the city.

You mentioned the SUNY alternatives, but would you say that these schools are just as good, or possibly even better? I plan on majoring in Computer Science and I am also looking for schools in New York.

If anyone could help me with a list of schools within New York that are good for Computer Science, possibly ranking them?

Buffalo and Stony Brook(SB) are both incredibly good for CS and engineering. I mean just look at the SB graduate rankings, I think they are 31st or 30th. UB is a bit back, but it is still a very solid department. Both of them are similar for undergrad and both offer a great education at a incredible price. if I were to list schools

Columbia
NYU
UB
SB
Poly
Queens
NYIT
City College

ccny is not a bad school. It is true that the job opportunities from Poly are way better in comparison to CCNY.

Now that I spent two years at poly, i would recommend anyone who didnt receive a scholarship to consider ccny for the first two years at least. The reason why i didnt go there was because it would have cost me the same. Transferring to poly shouldn’t be a problem with decent grades( B+?) in core classes.

Im not saying City College is horrible, in fact it may be great. But I have been to other Cuny Schools and was completely turned off. It was simply another 4 years of HS, and the student population showed that.

Where would you put the school in the list? I just want an idea of how good these SUNY’s are for Computer Science.

I am currently attending Queens College as a freshman and I plan to transfer after the Spring Semester. Anybody have any advice for me…classes or something I should take?

I should also note that I do not know any computer languages…I have a feeling this will have me struggle through Computer Science. Which languages will I be learning? I’m assuming C and C++? Just kind of random guesses :(

I suppose that honestly I really don’t know much about the major of Computer Science, but I do know that I enjoy working with computers. I am aware that there are many other threads on topics such as “Computer Science VS Software Engineering” or “CS vs CEE” or other threads dealing with Electrical Engineering and minoring in Computer Science, or something of the sort. However, I haven’t really found these threads of much help. I guess what I’m really asking for is what exactly will I be able to do if I pursue any of those routes in my future career? (Yes, I know that a Google search is the smartest thing to do because otherwise I’m just being spoon fed, but personal perspectives from others always seems more preferable.)

I wouldn’t really attempt to put Binghamton (Thomas Watson) anywhere on any “list”. That’s pretty meaningless for most undegraduate programs, you’ll need to investigate and make your own list. But it is a strong program with very strong students and good industry and graduate school prospects for those who do well. The engineering school at Binghamton is much smaller and therefore not as well-known as Buffalo or Stony Brook, but that could be a plus for many students, not so for others. My son visited Binghamton and Buffalo and was accepted to both, but much preferred Binghamton. All these SUNY schools will lead to good career or post-graduate opportunities.

You can ignore all of that I typed up there as I looked into an ACM link from another thread. However,

@member

I’m surprised that in the list, you put Queens before NYIT and City College. I’ve always thought that those two schools in the latter would be better for Computer Science than Queens. Why do you place Queens higher?

NYIT is about as bad of a school as I have ever seen. I spent a semester there there and the educational quality is garbage. It is simply a school for rich white kids who couldn’t get into NYU or Columbia and cant give up on the whole NYC experience. Educationally it is weak, the professors are weak, the research is weak and the school while at a great location at 59th street, the facilities of the school are horrific.

The Engineering education I received at My U which was much higher in the rankings was night and day in comparison to nyit, for the better. I wouldn’t wish a nyit education on my worst enemy.

Queens while still a cuny resembles to me more of a Suny school. It has a very large campus with lots of nice facilities. The student population is also filled more with students from private schools in the area than from public schools. City college while it may be a good program is more like a real Cuny school, plagued with public school kids who are simply not cut for higher education. There is a really big difference in the school’s student population and I feel most cuny schools. Most cuny schools are filled with minorities who are only in college because they just passed through the cities horrific public education system. Most cuny schools try to cater to these students and you can tell. Failing HS’s usually means many students must take many remedial classes, and sometimes it is just easier to degrade the entire level of education rather that deal with each student individually.

Where would you guys rank Stony Brook, Binghamton, and Buffalo in terms of Computer Engineering rank (including resources/research) and campus life?

I also get irked at the anti-CUNY attitude. I have one daughter at CUNY Brooklyn, and one graduated from Colgate. Each has its pluses and minuses.

I suppose I’ve always kind of had an anti-CUNY attitude too. Maybe it’s because of other people but obviously the SUNY’s seem to rank higher. Also, I never really wanted to be in the city. I liked a campus…which brings me to this question.

To anyone who has been to Stony Brook AND Buffalo, which campus do you like better?
