lol, its kinda sad that many people dont know about the LACs. Not that im making fun of Avon, but LACs are just generally not known. Its common to see people mistake it for cal poly pomona.

everyone on the west coast has usually heard of pomona, but not say, wesleyan or amherst.

Im from the west coast and it wasnt until i entered college that i heard about pomona lol..(my community college has an agreement with pomona college)

yeah honestly, my friends were like huh? when i told them i was considering pomona...i am from the east coast though but even so..a well known lac around here is swarthmore, probably b/c of the funky name ;]

I'm pretty sure Pomona doesn't have a pre-business concentration.

it's listed on their website. how sure are you?

This is the only thing I see about it. You can certainly prepare for business school by taking certain courses, and majoring in something like econ, but I don't think you can major in pre-business per se. Where are you seeing it listed on the website?

that's it??????

wow that's lame. they have an 'advisor' for you. you could study all that 'pre-business' crap practically anywhere and still be just as prepared.

Pomona's a liberal arts college. Business isn't a liberal art. If you look at most comparable schools, like Amherst or Swarthmore, you can't study business.

Racnna, that's a pretty typical list for a liberal arts college. And lest you be tempted to turn up your nose at liberal arts colleges, you can't major in business as an undergrad at Harvard either. Harvard College focuses on the liberal arts too. You can major in econ there and do business at the graduate level. Harvard's list of offering's for undergrads looks a lot like Pomona's.

(I'm only using HArvard as an example, by the way, because Harvard and Pomona are the two schools I know best, not because I think it's the be-all and end-all of education.)

actually on the college board, business is listed as a major harvard offers. i don't think thats the case though. perhaps because you can take classes at mit that's listed as a concentration?

I wouldnt recommend anyone to go to pomona unless u are from the west coast cuz its gonna be hard trying to find a job in the east coast. I recommend peeps to go to universities instead, their name recognition is always good.

nyu stern probably rings a greater name around here, but i think i'd prefer the pomona experience

Ummm, Pomona does OK when it comes to jobs anywhere in the country, or with grad school or fellowships. Here's a list of places the class of '06 went. Includes places like Credit Suisse, Ernst & Young, Deloitte Consulting, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, Bank of America, Federal Reserve Board, Accenture, Google. Remember this only represents 320 students - it's a long list.

SarahsDad is right. The people who need to have heard of Pomona have heard of it. Just because your next door neighbor in Connecticut hasn't, doesn't mean that the folks at Merrill Lynch (or whatever) haven't.

I did a fair amount of volunteer work while I was at Pomona, and through that I met all kinds of people in SoCal who hadn't heard of it, or thought it was a community college, or mixed it up with Cal Poly Pomona. These were just random people though-- not high-powered employers or profs in grad programs. Also-- this sounds snotty but it's true-- they were not people who ever could have gotten into Pomona. I'm at Harvard now (grad school) and the profs here all know about it, and most Harvard undergrads say something like "ooh, that's such a good school" when they hear I went there.

GO POMONA! er, I mean POMONA COLLEGE!

Sorry being random =)

lol who the hell said i was from connecticut? i'm from nyc and i don't speak to my next door neighbors about colleges. i realize that pomona is a liberal arts school, but why list the 'pre-business' nonsense on the site if you could practically do all of that at any school? it's misleading prospective applicants.

I only used "your neighbor in CT" as an example of how a whole lot of people in a whole lot of places haven't heard of Pomona. It wasn't meant to be taken literally, it was meant to illustrate a point.

I'm still not sure where you're seeing the pre-business stuff that is misleading. Plenty of students ARE pre-business at Pomona; I think they're mostly econ majors. Students are also pre-law, but they are not pre-law MAJORS, since that doesn't exist either. Would you also say that Pomona is being misleading by saying that many of its students are pre-law? Plenty of people who end up very successful in the professions went to liberal arts colleges. Since Pomona is arguably one of the best schools in the country for undergrad econ, it's not something you could do at any school. Or rather, you could do it at any school, but you could do it better at Pomona than at most schools.

I spoke about this before in another thread. Its a wrong assumption that "The people who need to know will know of pomona" Hello peeps! not all employers go to college (to get their masters), not all employers have heard of the LAC system, and definately, not all employers will know about pomona.

i feel like ive disagreed with you about this before, but youre just wrong mojojo! look at pomona
