And the wait begins…
Anyone have some tips on how to increase my chances at Pomona being waitlisted? I really don’t know much about the waitlist in general so anything would help.
Also, I never visited since I’m in Jersey, but do you think it might be helpful if I do and if I try to meet with my admissions officer there? Otherwise, should I email my admissions officer and ask her what I can do to improve my chances on the waitlist (besides email her with updates in a month)?
Pomona has a link for those on the waitlist (5th question down on this page):

Pomona’s waitlist actually means something, unlike other schools (cough cough U’Chicago). They only wait-listed 12% of applicants. About 66% of those students stay on the waitlist, and of them, around 20-40 are admitted depending on the yield (5-10% of those who stay).
Pomona looks to fill in holes in its class to admit wait-listed students, so if there’s a talent or award you’ve gotten and it was not mentioned in the application, definitely update the college. Pomona also wants to ensure that those who get off the waitlist will actually enroll at Pomona, so a letter of interest would be great to send to your admissions counselor. Other than that…fall in love with the places you get into. It’s hard to get off the wait-list, and it could very well be 0 if there’s overenrollment.
Looking through past Pomona waitlist threads, this is what one person did to get in:
“I sent them a one-page letter that basically included some accomplishments, aspects about me I felt were not highlighted in my original app, what Pomona could do for me and what I could do for Pomona, and that I was very interested in the school. I did not say I would attend if admitted, however. I asked if I could submit anything else to increase my chances, but my admissions counselor said that the letter was sufficient.”
When should I send my letter of continued interest to Pomona? I thought it was supposed to be in April but I know someone who was waitlisted at another SLAC and got in because he sent a letter right after and they were really impressed
Another question: in my letter of interest could it give me an edge to say I might double major in psych/neuro and late antique/medieval studies? Because my application shows interest in both history and psych/neuro but I only put psych and neuro down for majors, and I know Pomona is getting more and more people majoring in the sciences so maybe I would fill the “humanities” hole in their class of 2021 by talking about that major?
Is the waitlist offer response form literally just a box that you tick saying that you accept the offer? Or am I missing something here?
Yeah that’s it @WoleSoyinka
Anyone planning on visiting?
Is it helpful for waitlistees to visit? I live in Jersey so I’m only going to fly out if it will actually help (and I’ve actually never visited so maybe it would help with demonstrated interest?)
@WoleSoyinka
@ricka8 It could be but yeah I won’t unless it actually helps (especially since I’m all the way in the Philippines haha!) Maybe asking for a Skype interview would work as well, but I doubt you could just ask for one.
Is anyone planning on asking their regional admissions officer for info about the waitlist this week? I’m really hoping for some info as tomorrow is May 1!!
@ricka8 my regional admissions officer is coming to my school tomorrow, so I’m gonna have a quick chat with him, so I’ll ask him about that too!
@WoleSoyinka what’d he say?
@Andrax54 he said as of 2 hours ago they are very close to reaching their target :\
@WoleSoyinka noooo
Any more information? Now that the classes have been finalized.
Nopeee. Do you guys have any other sources of info besides college confidential hahah
Lol sadly no, I don’t even know where else to look for info on the waitlist. I’ve tried looking it up on google just to see if there are any articles posted about how many students have committed for class of 2021 but didn’t find anything. I’m gonna stalk past threads on the waitlist to see if there are any helpful tips there on finding info.
