Poor Math Grades, Applying as Mathematics Major - Effect on Admissions?

Well, maybe not math, but say economics or accounting. Would this have any bearing on admissions? I've seen a lot of people post that your "intended major" doesn't affect admissions, but if someone has math grades much much lower than any other subject, wouldn't it make them a weaker candidate for that major?

Any help understanding this would be great.

If the school admits by formula and is not a STEM-emphasis school (like many moderately or less selective state universities), probably not. If the school admits holistically, poor grades in math for an intended math major likely have an adverse effect.

If the school is non-selective (like a community college), then it obviously does not matter.

Doesn’t nearly every private university practice holistic admissions?

Another thing for you to consider is that if you really do have problems in math, it may limit your success in some of the majors you are considering.

That depends if you are truly poor in math or if your math ability is good but not your strongest point. If you are in a fairly rigorous math curriculum and getting B or better you are probably fine…If you are in a lower level math curriculum and struggling, you may want to think things through a little bit.

The majors you are considering all require at least a couple of semesters of calculus and statistics, which will also be seen again in classes like econometrics or quantitative analysis classes.

I’m sorry, but why would you major in math if you struggle with it? Do you maybe enjoy economics for the theory side of it? Maybe you could look at business (not sure how much math is involved) or politics…law?

Sorry to hijack the thread a little bit . . .but its related.

What about B to A grades in tough math classes, and low SAT Math and SAT Math 2 scores? How would that effect engineering or economics chances?

Given that the vast majority of high school math classes bare little resemblance to the classes a math major would take I don’t think it would be disqualifying. If you are good with proofs but have trouble with computational high school classes you should be fine as a math major.

^^^ If you’re struggling with HS math, you’re very likely going to struggle even more as a college math major. And nudity has nothing to do with it, UMTYMP student.

Bump 10char for both questions

I actually have the same question. I always used to think I was horrible at math, because I never tried at all, so in turn I never understood the material. So my math grades throughout high school were
8 - Algebra I: 73 (D)
9 - Geometry Honors: 77 (C), 79 (C)
10 - Algebra II Honors: 71 (D), 81 (C)
11 - Precal w/ Trig Honors: 68 (F), 94 (A) - I retook a semester of Precal and got a 93 (A).
12 - AP Calculus AB: 103 (A) - 1st quarter
12 - AP Statistics: 93 (A) - 1st quarter

I didn’t start trying until second semester of Precal, when I realized I’m actually really good at math if I apply myself. So for senior year I’m taking 2 maths (AP Calc and AP Stat), both of which I’m doing very well in, but I’m worried that my poor math grades earlier in HS will effect my college admissions since I chose Math major for UTK. But also, I got a 33 on my ACT math. Any thoughts?

And to answer your question, I don’t think poor math grades would effect your admissions that much if you chose Econ major. How were your Econ grades?

Bump…
