Poor SAT scores for Ivy Leagues, What Next?

Granted, I did slightly better than I thought I would and got a 2020, but that's the 25th percentile across the board for Ivy Leagues while my ACT without writing was a 34, 75th percentile across the board.

Should I solely focus on the ACT and take that in the fall, shooting for a 35 or a 34 again, but with writing and then not take SAT I again?

For colleges I'm sending my SAT II scores to that require one to submit all SAT or ACT scores, will they allow me to only send in those SAT II scores along with all my ACT scores? Or will they require me to send in my SAT I and see that score that is much lower than the equivalent ACT?

If you prepared for the SAT and got a 2020, then I think you should focus more heavily on the ACT. Your score is great, and, from the information you’ve given, it looks like the ACT is your strong point. In that case, you should focus on the ACT; if you drop to a 32 or 33, you can always send your non-writing test as a supplement. If, however, you only prepared for the ACT (“winging” the SAT), you may want to try your hand at a September ACT (it’s a killer date, and you’ll need to manage your schedule accordingly) and an October SAT. You could take Subject Tests in November depending on the school.

For the “send all” question, you may want to email Undergraduate Admissions for your schools of interest. Do note, though, that you may need to send a few before you get an appropriate response.

Thanks, I’ve just spent the night researching all the school’s I’m looking at and their score choice and subject tests policy.

I actually didn’t prepare for either, but I took another ACT a week and a half before the 34 I got (the 34 was a stated mandated test) and only got a 31, so a 3 point bump in a few days while I only studied math for both of them (which was good because my practice score from a few months before was a 27 and I ended up with a 34 and 35 on the two real tests). I didn’t really study for the SAT, I just took a practice test.

I think what I’ll do is just take the ACT in September and then take Math II (which will be at least 50 points higher than my Math I 660 score) in October along with possibly literature since virtually all the schools I’m applying too that require or recommend an SAT II along with ACT allow score choice for those. My top SAT II is US history at 790 and my second is World history at 720, so if I can score about a 720 on any other subject test that will be a benefit.

I plan on studying after I get back from college visits in mid-July heavily for the ACT. I’m glad it’s in September since it is early into the school year for me (We start in late August) instead of later.

My dream school is Yale, but I plan on applying Early Restrictive Action which moves the admission rate to 14% plus non-immedate family, but famous alumni, and only sending ACT scores (15% of Yale kids only send ACT scores, which is actually one of the highest percentages for the Ivy leagues). So even though I’m a white male in a middle-class family, there is some hope :)
