Popular majors=bad?

I've heard that popular majors at Dartmouth such as econ and psyc have HUGE class sizes and the departments are relatively small, compared to other Ivy League schools, so classes can be really difficult to get into. Is this true? Can majoring in something popular be a detriment to your education?

Intro classes are bigger, but that’s it. To not major in a subject you love for such an inconsequential reason would be ridiculous.

DartmouthForever is correct. Only the intro classes are big, and you’ll know by the end of one if you want to continue with the major. Econ and Govy are the two most popular majors at Dartmouth (Psych’s up there), so a lot of the low-level classes are weed-out classes. (This is especially true for Econ.) But to put the original poster’s mind at ease, I NEVER had a class had Dartmouth where size was an issue. The only huge classes are the really well-known “guts” that don’t cap.
