Hi, I'm looking to pursue photography as a major in college and I'm a junior now so of course I need to be building up a portfolio. The thing is, progress in a portfolio isn't exactly quantitative compared to how a student can compare their SAT scores or GPA to other candidates.

This is what I have so far, pretty much a variety of images as I honestly have NO clue as to what any colleges might be looking for.

What are colleges looking for in a portfolio? Demonstrated ability in a narrow field or theme or a variety of styles? Also is there a difference in what an art school would be looking for versus a general university? Again, I have no experience with this and would love any information or advice anyone could offer. :)

Thanks in advance!

Best thing to do is schedule a portfolio review with specific colleges you’re interested in.

Most art schools go to portfolio days: [National Portfolio Day - Home](http://www.portfolioday.net/)
And most art schools allow students to schedule tours and individual portfolio reviews.
Most schools will also have guidelines/suggestions posted on their website.

I’m not a photographer, but I think most schools like to see breadth in a variety of styles, as well as focus/depth in one or two major areas of interest.

Figure out which schools you’re interested in, and then contact those schools, find information on their websites, and schedule reviews with them. Best advice comes from the admissions officers themselves.

Thanks for the feedback! I’m unsure because I don’t want to apply to solely art schools because I want to do academics as well.

I’m in the same situation as you, I’m really glad I’m not the only one lollll
I’ve been looking into Academy of Art University & the Pratt Institute

aww yeah! I have no clue either so hopefully other people might have some advice :)

alauren, can you tell us what schools you are interested in? Do you have a list of any kind yet? Is there a location you want to stay around?

I have a few in mind but I haven’t really narrowed it down… looking at UPenn, U of Miami, Rutgers, Northwestern, Brown, USC among others.
