My D is putting together her portfolio and asked if I would post for her.
She has one photograph of a flower and one painting - different flowers. She feels that she should not include both because of similarity in subject matter. She also has an interesting self-portrait (photo) and a very nice pencil self-portrait. Again she feels she shouldn't put both in because the subject is the same.
All of the schools she is applying to are asking for varied media, so I think it's all OK. She's says that aesthetically it's not working. She is NOT applying to art schools - more design-type schools.
Any opinions?

I think that multiple could work as long as the rest is varied. you should also think about combining two, such as having both the photo and pencil portraits photographed together when you submit the portfolio.

my coworker got into ucla's art program and she said that they like portfolios that show some sort of development into a particular skill or style. im applying as a fall 09 transfer, and i plan on submitting all paintings which are mostly portraits

Your best work whatever it is.

As much variety in media as possible, but not at the expense of quality.

This is all that should concern you.
