Portfolio for Design|Media Arts at UCLA

I'm planning on majoring in either Fine Art or Design|Media Arts at UCLA, but DMA is my first choice. I've heard that DMA is a lot more competitive than Fine Art, though, so I'm wondering if I have a chance of getting in. Could someone give me feedback on my artwork? My portfolio is here: Elyse Yang - Portfolio

Both majors are very competitive, although DMA is borderline ridiculous. Admission evaluation is based almost entirely on talent.

Hm, I’m thinking about Fine Art instead now, after looking over the two programs again. Does anyone have an opinion on my portfolio?

I’ve heard that a lot of weight is placed on creativity, not just skill. They want people who will bring something unique to the department.

Does the department list what they want to see in a portfolio? I have no idea what a D/MA portfolio should look like, but I know in fine arts, usually they like to see a diversity of work. Your porfolio appears to me to demonstrate a high skill level and creativity, but my only concern (as I said, not knowing what they want to see) would be a lack of diversity of styles/subject matter…

Thanks for the input, tia and hana! I also feel that my work lacks diversity and creativity, so I’ve been busy making some of my better ideas into finished pieces.

S D|MA’05’s portfolio consisted of pieces that he did for art class, e.g., two self-portraits - one by hand and the other in digital media, plus projects that he did for publication such as the covers of his HS course catalogue, student handbook, and a walking map (this last project was a paid gig). You have some nice stuff in your portfolio, but if you look at the details (<a href=“UCLA Arts: School of the Arts and Architecture”>UCLA Arts: School of the Arts and Architecture), there’s mention of website design and other applied materials. Fine arts on the other hand is painting and sculpture primarily, but I may be wrong. And yes, it’s competitive! When S applied, there were 650+ applications for 55 spots.

Whatever you decide, good luck!
