I'm applying to the CCA summer pre-college and I need to select 8 images to use within my portfolio. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Also, do you think I stand a chance of getting a merit scholarship?

Thanks!

I really liked Reading Rainbow the most. I liked Untitled and Empyrean 4. I’m not a pro but I have an amateur appreciation for art so take my opinion with an ample grain of salt. However, my S is in art school and his ability to self-select was considered important. And I must say that he added to pieces I wasn’t thrilled with and the reviewers went crazy over them. So, go with your gut.

These images are very good and your exposure, composition, and use of color are very thoughful. However, I would have to say that Leisure, Untitled, and Empyrean #4 aren’t your strongest pieces but there is definitely potential in those images.

Remember that the CCA is looking for your ability and potential as a artist. Give them an array an images with similar narrative and avoid giving them the same image in different views. Try to demonstrate your interest, knowledge of visual principles (ie. do not use Empyrean #1 unless you wanted the branches to seem as though they are growing out of your models head), and don’t be afraid to show them other work besides your photography.

I applied for the CCA as a transfer back in 2011 but didn’t get in due to low grades. I’ll be trying again for next semester… I hope you get in, good luck!

I would say that titles make a huge difference to how you are taken seriously. reading rainbow and Untitled are the best. “Untitled” certainly deserves the thought that would give it a title. Empyrean #4 is also excellent but would be better in black and white. Keep up the good work. If something has meaning to you, part of your job as an artist is to convince others while it is worthwhile.
