Hi I'm a senior in high school looking to go to an art school, but I really don't know if i can get in. I mean I've had a few drawing classes, and i don't think I'm horrible, but i want to major in graphic design. I did not even know until this past summer that i needed a portfolio with drawing to get into graphic design. That did not help me at all..So here I am a few months before I have to hand in a perfect portfolio, and i don't know. I reallllly want to go to Tyler School of Art (its part of temple) but i hear its really challenging and really competitive. If you want to look at some of my stuff online go ahead. I want to know if anyone knows of any others good art colleges preferably in Pennsylvania. And please feel free to give me feedback on my work. Also i am looking for examples of portfolios online, but i can't really finds any. Thanks soo much if you take the time to read this i appreciate it.

It’d help if you would link to your portfolio?

yeah that would help haha

hello- contact someone at Tyler now and ask for a portfolio review. Let Them know that you think your portfolio is minimal and ask what else you need. Do it quickly. Also, I see from your link that you arent taking art classes now. How come?

im taking art classes at my school but its a basic class i just have to do everything a lot better than is needed

First of all. Take a deep breath.

Realize that no portfolio is perfect-- in fact, most are far from it. I suggest you visit a modern art museum to give you some perspective. It really makes you wonder how some of those pieces even got up there.

And for the next few weeks draw everyday. It can be for a specific piece or even doodles in a sketchbook. Anything to get you “in the zone”. Don’t worry if the piece doesn’t look “perfect” but make sure that the artwork sort of reflects who you are.

If your school has AP Studio Art, I really encourage you to take it! The assignments are a lot more challenging and abstract and you basically get the entire class period to just work on it. The environment is really laid back and being with other talented artists can be inspiring and intimidating at the same time.

And if you for some reason can’t take AP Art, try to find a quiet place where you can work undisturbed. It can be in your room, at a studio, etc.

As for portfolios, google “college board ap studio art” for some examples of student work and what they’re rated on a scale of 1-6. And visit, or at least contact, some of the unitversities you’re interested in for examples of what they expect.

For the next few weeks, just work hard and try not to think too much about the deadline. If you feel discouraged at times, remember that art is subjective so it’s never really “good” or “bad”.

The school may be difficult to get into but I think you have a good shot!

awww thanks! this actually really helped. it gave me a lot of confidence i really appreciate. as for studio art my school does have it but you cant go into it unless you’ve taken drawing and painting 1-3 but i am actually in ap studio art for graphic design

Hello- I gave you the advice I gave you about contacting someone at Tyler because I know someone who was in a similar situation and it worked for them. They got guidance from a Tyler adcon who helped them generate a series of drawings (very specific assignments) that they then used as part of the admission process. This was for a person who was a good student, but because of their other classes had not had a chance to to the kind of portfolio that AP art kids or magnet kids generate.

oh wow so i would just call and say “hi i was just wondering what specific pieces you need for a portfolio”

No- you would ask for an admission interview, and bring your work, and talk to them. Then hopefully they would help you.
