Positivity: suggest next-to-top CS schools for high scores kid

I take it that the net price is affordable, so that the college money won’t run out before he graduates (since you mentioned earlier about them being naive about college costs)?

Did he get any merit aid?

They were naive, but they will be able to afford the cost. That won’t be an issue, happily.

I think he got a little merit aid. Not sure. I expected him to get a pretty big award, but evidently the money went to kids with better qualifications. It’s all good: just a sign that he is in the right place among his academic peers.

My son got into Harvard and CMU but was waitlisted at Harvey Mudd.

That’s very interesting. A friend of my daughter has a similar experience.
Was accepted at Cal Tech, Princeton, Stanford but waitlisted at Mudd (I believe she was rejected by Harvard).

There is a lot of mention of CMU on this thread. I believe the CS department has a separate admission? (the rate is in the low 6%?)

Back in the old days, these schools (CMU, UIUC, Michigan, etc) were pretty easy to get into - man, I feel old.
Talked to a neighbor (I think she is in the 70’s) recently and she said the same thing about WUSTL.

Thanks for the update. It’s always nice to hear how these stories end.

@furrydog, yes CMU’s different schools have different admit rates. SCS was 5% last year, and has been the lowest of the various CMU schools for a while. Harvey Mudd bills itself as an LAC more than a tech school so it may not actually have been the best fit for ds, we should have visited when we did our CA trip, but it wasn’t on our radar at the time.

Glad to know the OP’s story had a happy ending. And yes thank you for updating!

Thanks for the read @Cardinal Fang! Just went through the entire thread (wasn’t following parent forum last year) and enjoyed the journey and the closure. Maybe more so because I have a CS student attending SCU in the fall. The internships and job opportunities out the door seemed too good to pass up. And there is something about the Jesuits - they just know how to educate. Glad it worked out for your nephew.

I think CMU school of drama might be the winner with lowest overall admit rates. Last year over 2400 kids auditioned to be an acting or musical theater major there, they took 12 in one and 10 in the other…

3% acceptance in school of drama vs 5% in CS

Yup, my D goes to CMU and Drama and CS have the lowest admit rates.

Yup, you are right. I didn’t scroll down far enough on the admissions stats page - didn’t see that all the arts programs were listed separately! I knew drama was impossibly low!

In the East, you should look at WPI (underrated, excellent school and you will get merit money), Northeastern (overrated, overpriced, but they have a great internship program and your son will have a job when he gets out), and Olin (a reach for anyone, but they have a really innovative approach to engineering that MIT is looking out. Also, if you get in, it’s an automatic half ride. In NY, look at RIT. Very good school, but I don’t know much about it except that my jerk ex-husband graduated from there.
