Possibility of Dropping a Major Prep Class with a W.

The month of March is upon us and decisions are trickling out, but with school still going on I have a few questions. I have completed ALL requirements for IGETC and have used assist.org to complete my major prep. However, with a difficult course in Calculus 3, I find that I am struggling with the class of my major prep.

Currently I have 53 credits at the end of winter semester and 14 credits pending for spring semester. By dropping Calc 3, I will still be able to complete the last semester with 62 credits.

I am wondering: will dropping out of a major prep class rescind any such decisions the school will have made? I have seen mixed responses on schools letting students to continue classes throughout the summer, but I don't want to be dependent on that. Simply put, how will dropping Calc 3 with a W affect me come time for admission decisions?

I have already scheduled a meeting with my counselor, but I'd like some more advice from an experienced group that I find here. Thank you for all your responses, guys!

I am in the same boat you are. My daughter recently developed a serious medical condition so I have had to drop two of my major prep classes. The person I spoke to someone in admissions told me to update my TAU (you have until March 31st) and explain the reason for dropping the classes. They also told me that I can appeal if my admission is rescinded/denied due to my extenuating circumstances. You should update your TAU ASAP. Does your major require you to complete all the prep courses for admission? If not, you will probably be okay. :)

Me too! My first choice is UCSD and my major is Computer Science. UCSD do not even need me to take Differential Equation, but other UCs want me to, that’s why I took it along Calc 3 and C++ this semester so that if I didn’t get into UCSD, I could have other options. I don’t think I could handle Diff. Equ.
should I update my TAU now…and that’s all it takes?!

The people that know work in UC admissions. You should contact the schools where you have applied and ask. It is entirely possible that they would rescind you if you drop the class and go from someone who completed all the prep for the major to someone who is missing a class. And its also possible that with your GPA and all-but-one completed they still keep you. So you can ask people here to guess what the UCs might do, or you can ask the UCs what they will do.
