Hi everyone,
I noticed on the application of Duke I am required to choose the school that I want to go. Now I am thinking about math or science so I marked Arts and Sciences as my first choice. However, I may want to turn to engineering some time in college. So is it possible to transfer from arts and sciences college (Trinity) to engineering school (Pratt) or even a double major across these two divisions?
Any comments are welcomed.
Thank you.

You can double major between schools if you are in Pratt, but not in Trinity. For example, if you are in Pratt, you can double major in BME and Math if you wanted to, but if you are in Trinity, you can major in Math but not in BME. You can, however, double major within the same school.
You can transfer from one to the other, but I think you have to redo the entire application process again. Also, only about 5 students do that each year.

I don’t think it’s the entire application process. It’s much easier to transfer from Pratt into Trinity whereas I think transferring the other way involves submitting some grade transcripts from HS and college and maybe an evaluation or meeting with the dean.

The problem is that Pratt and engineering in general has very defined sequences of courses that serve as pre-requisites for advanced courses. Usually people do the transfer in the first 2 semesters and even then, many people who are inclined to transfer into Pratt are encouraged to take the basic engineering courses like EGR53 while still in Trinity so that they don’t fall behind once they transfer.

Thank you both. But is the process that selective as taxisRus says? Only 5 students each year? I think the requirement for engineering is easy to meet if I already study the sequence of a math/science major. Do I need really exceptional grades (straight A’s, honors class) to be approved of transferring?

There is a lot of misinformation on this thread. As far as I know, way more than 5 students transfer from Trinity to Pratt each year. Also, as someone else mentioned, transferring from Pratt to Trinity is very straightforward. You can also create your own major at Duke (check out program 2).

I don’t think there’s a lot of misinformation on this thread. Everything posted so far is mostly true.

And I think TaxiRus didn’t mean there’s a cap for transferring into Pratt, just that very few people transfer in versus transferring out. And like I said, transferring into Engineering school involves some sort of evaluation but it’s not onerous, especially if you’ve been taking engineering classes and have gotten good grades to show you can handle the work.

There’s actually a webpage on the Duke website about this and I quote directly:
