I am a first-year Computer Science major here at UCSD. I had an an abysmal first quarter, which led to me getting put on academic probation. I fear that my GPA for this quarter will once again fall below a 2.0 (all depends on my finals), but I do believe my cumulative GPA will be above a 2.0. Academic Probation states that I must maintain both a term and cumulative GPA of 2.0. Does anyone know/have an idea on (or have experience with this situation) the likely-hood of me getting dismissed from the university after 2 consecutive quarters of academic probation?
If anyone is wondering, while I take full responsibility and understand the predicament I’m in is entirely my fault, part of my academic failure is due to the fact that I’m working anywhere from 12-20 hours a week (via work study). I was really never able to find academic success, and working only made it worse. e.g. not being able to go to office hours/tutoring on a consistent basis or having adequate time to study. I pretty much financially support myself, which is why I didn’t stop working after the first quarter, but now my work-study award is almost up, and I probably have enough saved up to get me through the next quarter and summer.
I was actually doing fine this quarter until I was invited to a major tech company for a prestigious 4-day engineering conference to network and possibly land an internship. I probably shouldn’t have gone and missed class, but at that point, I point felt like it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I fell pretty behind because of it and was never really able to catch up.
I am anticipating that I will be dismissed, in which case I will appeal and ask to just have one quarter where I’m not working to show that I can succeed at this school. Also, my grades in my programming classes are fine; it’s everything else that I’m having trouble with. Not sure if that makes much of a difference. I am talking to an adviser after my finals on Monday, but I’m not too hopeful. Just looking for some opinions on here.
Thanks!
