Possible CC forum data mining?! How do you maintain privacy over the internet?

I'm wondering what precautions people usually take to secure their identity on the internet. What advice can you give?

I ask, because I recently received an email from z.i.n.c.h.com saying:

We understand from CollegeWeekLive that you are interested in transferring. If you are still searching for that one school that stands out above the rest, you should take a look at z.i.n.c.h.

Since the only place I ever mentioned transferring was here on CC, it's obvious the info was leaked from here. I usually never reveal personal info about myself, and in this case, it seems the info was leaked underground, since nothing connects my account on CC with the one I created for CollegeWeekLive a year ago, other than my email address which is not listed, and nowhere else would I have ever revealed my thoughts on transferring. No facebook connections or anything of the like.

Not specific to CC, but in general, how would you have avoided such a situation? Was there really anything I could have done to prevent this breach of privacy? Should the internet be more regulated?

I already created another thread to address this specifically for CC.
