I post this here not because it is a cafe item so to speak but because nobody ever reads the other CC community folder.

I am basically wondering how safe are we to post whatever we like about people, places etc. without fear of consequences. The internet has made almost everything anonymous, yet people still lose their jobs when they make posts on flicker, youtube or facebook.

How can we be sure we wont lose our place on the admitted students list when we say nasty things about a university.

This is all hypothetical, since I have nothing nasty to say, yet. But i more want to discuss the topic of internet anonymity here

And how do you suppose they would know who you are? Track your IP address to your house or something? People lose their jobs on flickr and facebook because it is obvious that they are who they are in their pictures and their name is prominently displayed on or next to the pictures.

Here, you simply have your username and IP address and that is it. And I would venture a guess that if any university were to request the IP address of a poster on an internet forum, get that IP address, track that IP address to your computer, and then deny you admission or expel you, that there would be a massive outcry on both the internet and in the media.

So, you can rest assured you will not lose your place on the admitted students list.

You should be careful not to be too specific about what your school is like, how you’re val or sal of it, how you’re applying to certain schools, etc. People can sometimes identify you from such details.

I have never really had to post many stats, but for example if I did I would mildly change it. Change a 4.7 weighted to 4.66… 2340 SAT to 2380, or something like that. So no one can identify you.

um, if you start talking about things you shouldn’t be (SAT or AP answers, cheating, illegal activities, etc), it can be seen and come back to haunt you

also, if you give indications that you consider a particular school a safety or somehow undesirable, and it’s seen and identified by an admissions person, that doesn’t bode well, either.

I understand that it’s possible to identify people based on their stats. But would an admissions officer really go through hundreds of CC posts looking for someone whose stats matched their applicant’s, on the slim chance that they said something so radical it would affect their decision?

On top if this they would need to track the IP to make sure it’s coming from where they think the student lives, and even then it doesn’t guarantee that it was the student actually writing it. So no…they wouldn’t
