Possible Chances!!

I'm currently a High School Junior @ a public school in New Hampshire. Typically, we send very few grads off to Ivy League Schools, although there is maybe one every other year or so.
Potential Major: International Relations

**Any info/Suggestions on Improving my Stats would be Great! Thanks!

. . . Bump?

SAT Scores? Without them its hard to evaluate. IR is a very popular major, so unless you can truly distinguish yourself, you may be at a disadvantage. If your school only sends a few, you are ranked 14th, that won't help you too much. However, a nice test score and kick butt essays can change things.

yeah, IR is a popular major... if you're at Brown.

you may have the wrong school. Econ and PoliSci probably account for half the CC student body.

I'm planning on taking the SAT's this winter and I think my essays and recommendations will be my strongest assets...

The reason I am looking @ Columbia is partly because of obtaining a degree in IR and then going to Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs for my graduate degree...

Asides from SAT's, what else could i possibly improve?

The rigor of your courseload - including classes such as Concert Choir, "Wellness", Acting, and Algebra 2 which is a 9th-grade subject in many schools - may not reflect well upon you, especially that B+ at the moment.

I would pick the 3 activities that are most important to you and try to focus on them for the next 12 months, and not try to spread yourself too thin. Field Hockey definitely sounds like it ought to be one of them, and probably MUN too. The important thing is to show depth. Being in 4 honors societies, without much further comment, shows lack of initiative.

How do you get an A+ in english?

uhhhh, columbia doesnt offer international relations as a major. you can get your MIA at SIPA, but there are no undergrad programs for international relations. maybe you should make sure the schools you're applying to have the majors you want.

Denzera, I don't see anything wrong with the OP's courseload. She has 5 academic classes, which is normal. My guess is that Wellness (Health?) is a required course. And it seems that (like at my school) choir is part of the school day so you have to use up a class period for it. Should she sacrifice an activity she enjoys just to take another academic class? At my school over half of the students are in at least one music ensemble and it is infrequent that someone going to a top school was not involved in music. And acting might seem like a light class, but if that's one of the OP's interests, then it's perfectly fine.

Yes, Wellness is required for all juniors/seniors at my school and concert choir is highest mixed performing ensemble and takes care of art credits. Also, the class is Advanced Acting and is a select group of 10 or less students that have gotten the director's approval to be in the class, and since acting is a passion and I've been in four shows (and counting) I decided to take it in the spring (Wellness = fall and acting = spring).

As far as a major, I asked this question @ a Columbia meeting in Boston and she said I could major in Political Science w/ a concentration in International Affairs.

-As for the A+ in English, it's my strongest subject and last year I had almost all straight A+'s.
