Possible for me to get a 2300?

I'm taking the SAT this October as a junior. I haven't taken it yet and I really want to get at least a 2150, but a 2300 is my (probably unrealistic) goal. I took the PSAT in 9th and 10th and got a 159 and a 195, respectively. I have taken a few practice PSATs and a few tests from the Blue Book and usually score between 2100-2200. My worst sections are CR and Writing. I usually get 800 on math. Besides those few practice tests, I haven't done any real prep. I just purchased the Essential 500 and The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar, and I plan on working through those books in order to improve my reading and writing scores. It seems like most of the questions I'm getting wrong on the reading section have to do with my apparent lack of knowledge in vocabulary, so I'm hoping the Essential 500 will help a lot in that area. Also I'll be taking AP Lang this year and the teacher is excellent so I'm hoping my writing skills will improve drastically from that. At the moment, I'm scoring about 630-670 on CR and 670-710 on writing. My question is, will it be possible to raise my CR to a 730+ and Writing to a 770+?

Writing is definitely possible. I’m in the same boat as you are; I’ve been getting 800 math and 630-670CR, but I’ve improved my writing from low 600s to high 700s. Just take a lot of practice tests and make sure you complete the Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar. I’m not really sure about CR; it’s really hard to improve.

thanks. Yeah I’ve always heard it’s tough to improve CR. I have improved a lot since 9th and 10th grade PSAT (48 & 55),so I think more time and tons of practice will be the most effective way. Hopefully I can improve my writing like you did.

Does anyone have any CR improvement stories that they’d like to share?

I have same problems except my CR is still in the lower scores of 550-600. I want to score at least 650 on the actual test. I think reviewing helps a lot. It raise me from 450 to a steady 600, but I’m trying to figure out what exactly my problem is. Maybe read too slowly, maybe not carful enough. Please help if you guys have any methods to improve from a 600+! And writing is definitely possible to improve if you work really hard on all kinds of Q types. I went from 400 to 690, and my weakest part is the essay.

It’s definitely possible. I got a 198 PSAT, and a 1980 SAT with no studying (590 CR 770 M 620 W 10 essay). Then I started studying, and with 3 weeks of practice, I raised my score to a 2240 (680 CR 760 M 800 W 12 essay). I’m planning to score 2300+ in October by studying vocab, which is what brought my CR down so much. Just practice, practice, practice, and practice some more, and eventually, you will see a lot of improvement.

satman how do u study for CR?

It seems like doing as much practice as possible, learning new vocabulary, and reading high level material (academic journals, classic novels, etc…) is the best way to increase CR score. Also following Noitaraperp’s guide on http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/750399-how-attack-sat-critical-reading-section-effectively.html</a> seems to be an excellent way of improving. If anyone else has any other tips, feel free to post them.

Read “People’s History of the U.S.” for an accretion and amelioration of vocabulary inquiry and comprehension. A sometimes intricate and tedious read, yet very informative.
