Possible Personal Statement Topic

Hey guys, I'm quite unsure if I should talk about a certain topic in my essays. Like many other on these forums, my parents went through divorce 9th and 10th grade. Throughout these two years I had to attend therapists and psychologist counseling many times a week. Those two years made my emotional life horrendous, affecting my grades. Luckily I recovered junior year and finished the year with strong grades. Do you guys think I should speak about this on my personal statement? Thanks for your time, have a great day! :D

So, on one hand your essay would help explain your grade decline BUT on the other hand, it could also come across as you making excuses or being self-pitying.

My suggestion:

You can definitely write about the “heavy stuff” in your life, but only if you do it the right way. Try and find a positive story that you can tell that somehow connects to the divorce. In other words, don’t make the divorce or your fallen grades the focus of the essay. Make the story the focus, and weave in the other details. I can’t really be of more help, because the story is going to have to be your own. Focus the essay on a fond memory, or your relationship with your parents…make the divorce the sidekick character, not the protagonist.

hmm.I appreciate your feedback, freedom. I will most likely do similar to what you mentioned. Once again thanks for you help! :)
