DS received a scholarship that would require maintaining a 3.5 GPA all 4 years. Is that possible in Aerospace Engineering in Muir? He has just a short time to decide if he should take it and I am concerned about this strict requirement. Thanks in advance.

I have the same concern? 3.5 GPA seems too high to maintain in engineering.
Can someone please tell us how tough it is to maintain this GPA at UCSD?

I read the letter again and what I understood is staying in engineering is a requirement and 3.5 GPA is the expectation. I really want to take this opportunity but if 3.5 GPA is a requirement then I have to look at my other options.

confusedper, I sent you a message, did you get it? What is your major?

I found this chart so that does help knowing that 21.5% of Engineering students have a 3.5 but is the requirement EVERY SINGLE QUARTER? Here is the link to the chart:
<a href=“Undergraduate Statistics”>Undergraduate Statistics;

This seems pretty hard and there isn’t any information about a “probation period” if your gpa drops, like how long you have to get it back up. Did you see anything like that? No wonder only about 10 people take it out of 50-it’s scary!

If you lose the Jacobs because of a drop in the gpa or want to leave Engineering and still have a 3.0gpa, then you still keep your Regents so if you have financial need, it’s met with the Regents scholarship. I guess that’s kind of a safety net. Over 30% in Engineering have at least a 3.0 gpa. DS has had straight As, always, but there is a lot of pressure having so much $$ at stake.

Most of all, I also don’t like that DS would have to reply by April 9th, right BEFORE the Drake Scholarship for Berkeley is announced. I thought he would have until May 1st to decide and this kind of time pressure is not good. That is just 3 days after Triton Day.

@ fidoprincess, thanks for all the information. My major is chemical engineering and I am going to call them soon and ask them if it is a requirement or not. I do have Regents but I don’t qualify for financial aid. I had all As all my life but in college especially in engineering I am not sure. I read in some old thread above 3.0 should be OK but we have to confirm it with the staff.

@ fidoprincess ,I found this old thread
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-san-diego/158476-jacobs-engineering-scholarship-2.html
I think I am going to ask them personally on Tritons day

Yes, does the letter say “expected” to maintain or “must”? DS has it so I can’t check. Thanks for the link to the old post but that is 2006, so things might have changed.

What college did you request? How do you pick the research project you want to join?

I think my DS should take it but he isn’t going to decide until he goes to Triton Day. If you don’t qualify for finaid, it really IS a LOT of money and any money your parents set aside for you for college could then go to grad school. For DS, with Regents, we would have to pay around 10K per year so that’s still a substantial savings but hard for us to come up with that EFC.

Did you also interview for Regents at Cal? Were you invited to apply for UCLA Regents?

DS has some difficult choices and I imagine you do too! Cal is a lot closer to home but of course, we don’t know if he won regents yet, so I hoped he would go there but SD is beautiful even if it’s a long drive. What are your other choices?

Here are the questions re scholarships that sybbie on the Financial Aid forum said to ask:
Is the scholarship automatically renewable for all 4 years? Yes, we know this already.
Is there a minimum GPA required to keep the scholarship? Yes, the 3.5! so we need to know if this is required or “expected” or what?
I plan on asking the rest when we go, too!
Is there a phase in to the GPA? I think this means do freshmen get a break adjusting in the first year or something.
Is there a grace period regarding the gpa?
Is it calculated at the end of each semester or is it cumulative at the end of each year/each subsequent term/year?
Is there an appeal process should something happen and your D does not meet the gpa requirement?
What percentage of students lose their scholarship?

Didn’t you love the package? The confetti was SO cute. Did you RSVP for the dinner? I think there are some forms to send in asap for the overnight so I have to ask DS about that. Congrats!! This is exciting for you and DS.

To partially your original question; YES it is possible. My son graduated from UAH last fall with a 3.89 and his lowest GPA (per quarter) was a 3.77. But even with that he can’t get a job right now, everyone seems to want a Master’s degree, so he stayed in school fr thar.

Tomcat104 - can you son co-op at MSFC while going for his master’s at UAH?

I thought this is a question about GPA at UCSD and not UAH?
