Long story short, I may have cited a lecture incorrectly, as I did not mention that the lecture was split into 2 halves. Instead, I cited it as if it was 1 whole lecture with the same title that took place over a couple of weeks. I am nervous my professor could say I plagiarized, even though this was definitely not the intention. Should I email her or bring this up?
I don’t understand why citing a two-part thing as if it was a one-part thing would be plagiarism. What’s your thought process here?
@bodangles uhh not really sure I have one. I’m very paranoid that I’ll be accused in general, always have been.
I really don’t think it’s going to be a big deal. If your professor points it out as a mistake, then it could be considered “incorrect” for the purposes of the assignment, but I highly doubt plagiarism would be the reason.
@bodangles no matter how silly that question was, I’m thankful you answered. You’re a very helpful poster, thanks for all of your time!
When you say it was split into two halves, you mean that it was the same lecture (Example: Chapter 1 - Anatomy of a Cell) but was delivered over two class sessions? Because if that’s the case, then I don’t really see any issue with citing it as a single lecture.
@preamble1776 Essentially, yes. They were both entitled “sociological imagination,” it’s just that the second had an emphasis on methods with a subtitle “studying the social world: challenges in social research.”
Anyway, this is an error in citation at worst but not plagiarism.
This will almost certainly result in at most a warning if the professor notices (and that’s a big if). I seriously doubt that a professor has the time necessary to look at every one of your sources and decide if the way you cited the text meets every APA rule. Even papers published in prestigious journals often contain minor citation errors such as only including the continuous page numbers or incorrect dates of publication.
@CheddarcheeseMN do students receive warnings or punishments for citation errors.
Points taken off at the very most, in my experience…
@SeinfeldFan1 also very interested…in a similar situation.
@aishwar6 did you make a similar post?
@SeinfeldFan1 yes!
