Got really bored and can’t fall asleep (just back from 4th of July party) so I decided to type this up.

Prompt:
Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below:
Inconsistency is commonly thought to be an undesirable personality trait, and inconsistent people are viewed as indecisive and weak willed. On the other hand, firm commitment to an idea or plan of action is associated with personal and intellectual strength, stability, and honesty. Thus, once we have made a choice or taken a stand, it is best not to change.

Adapted from Robert B. Cialdini, Influence: How and Why People Agree to Things
Assignment: Is it best not to change our ideas, opinions, or behaviors? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.
My 11 Essay – I don’t think its that great but I got an 11 at least

When a situation arises where a change of plan is needed, then it is best to change our ideas, opinions, and behaviors. If society and the individuals in that society refust to adapt, then they will never advance. It has been seen through the annals of history, modern day sports, and literature that changing ideas, opinions, and behaviors is far better than close mindedly doing the same thing over and over again.
Let us examine history. When going into World War I, President Wilson had his heart and his mind set on his Fourteen Points, especially his idea to build a League of Nations. He was so close minded about establishing this League that at the Peace treaty of World War I, The Treaty of Versailles, he compromised his other thirteen point for a fair peace program in order to establish his League of Nations. This changed the way the conference was handled, for Germany was looking for a plan that incorporated Wilson’s points. Instead, they got one that was brutally unfair to Germany. And, when Wilson came back to the U.S. the Republican Congress rejected his League. So, for all of Wilson’s determination, he accomplished two things. First he gave the Germans a raw deal which was one of Hitler’s huge selling points in his coming to power. In affect, he jump started World War II and gave Germany a reason to follow Hitler. Also, he ended up loosing all faith from his congress, which hurt him severely. Had Wilson adapted and listened to his advisors who told him the League was not liked in America, he might have retained some faith in him and given Hitler a harder time in coming to power. Such is the price of close-mindedness.
Also, in modern day sports, we see how adapting to new circumstances is necessary. Dick Vitale, ESPN sports analyst, repeatedly states that the team that makes the best adjustments at halftime wins. Obviously, if something is not working one has to change ones plan to find something that does work instead of sticking with the same plan that will not work. Change is necessary to give a team the best chance to win, and it is necessary so that people have greater chances of succeeding in their actions.
In the book, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, there is a child prodigy, Ender, who battles aliens using a computer simulator. He constantly finds himself changing his battle strategy during the middle of the fight to give him and his team the greatest chance at victory. He doesn’t keep one plan and blindly follow it, but makes his formations so that he can maneuver and change is tactics as necessary.
Even my little brother knows the importance of adaptation. When we play football, he realizes that he cannot run through me because I am bigger and stronger than he is. Instead, he uses his quickness, speed and agility to his favor, after previously trying to power thorough me to no avail. He changed his plan to his advantage and that is what is important. Adapting your strategy to give you the best chance at success.

PM me for my 12 essay on the June test.

PM me for my 12 essay on the June test as well.

hey senior 07 can u please send it to me also at angelrod23172@hotmail.com

well it'd be really awesome if they hadn't actually "scanned" my essay from when i'd actually written it...typing it out on collegeboard would've been nice, but I'm interested in why I got a 12, so I'll go ahead and type it out for ya since it doesn't look like anyone else has:

Prompt: It is not that people dislike being part of a community; it is just that they care about their individual freedoms more. People value neighborliness and social interaction--until being a part of a group requires them to limit their freedom for the larger good of the group. But a community or group cannot function effectively unless people are willing to set aside their personal interests.

Does the success of a community--whether it is a class, a team, a family, a nation, or any other group--depend upon people's willingness to limit their personal interests?

Men have struggled with the issue of the importance of community since the dawn of civilization. From the conservative view of "every man for himself" to the liberal philosophy of caring for everyone, there have been many proposed solutions to not restrict personal freedoms yet still strive for equality. As has been demonstrated in the past and even today, the most pragmatic approach to community is through the use of democracy.
In her book, The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand expressed her support of a world where the free-thinker rules. Howard Roark, an immutable architect, refuses to give in to the demands of the community and will only design buildings to his liking. Elsworth Toohey, the antagonist, encourages people to not strive for excellence and to be humble, self-sacrificing community members. Roark explains on trial that it is the free thinker that benefits society through his new creations and that men like Toohey merely feed off of other men's ideas.
During the Cold War, the idea of communism was spreading. Americans refuted the idea of giiving up individuality for the community. As free enterprise continued in America, the economy prospered. The Soviets, without any motivation, were known for being unproductive. In one instance, Soviet workers would produce a block of steel to meet their quota, and then at the end of the year they would melt it back down and use the same substance to meet the new quota. Ultimately, the communal system collapsed as the people no longer had any drive.
Today, the United States leads the world because it functions as a democracy. Citizens are constantly pushing their goals on the government. This is extremely efficient as the people can retain their rights and are motivated to excel, and yet the community will not be left to fend for itself. To completely consume one's being in the community has proven unsuccessful, while giving a voice to everyone has created a balance.

I walked out of there unsure as to whether I had properly addressed the question. But I guess I did quite well...just took it in a different direction.

wow that seems so short, but I write so big it took up both pages...I guess for 20 minutes it was long enough though.

Sorry for anyone I haven't sent my essay to yet. I have it all typed out on my laptop, but my internet access isn't working on that computer right now so I've only been able to send it to one person so far.

Sorry! I'll send it as soon as possible. Haven't forgotten about you...

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but how does the 1-6 score on the essay get translated into a 1-12 score? I thought it was just doubling, but then how do people get 11's and the like? Thanks!
