Post M9 Advice/Directions - Please Read Before Starting a New Thread

With thanks to @SevenDad

"Every year that I’ve been on the BS forum, there have been people who are very active in the months and weeks leading up to M10, and then — POOF — they disappear, never to report their results.

While I can understand that it might not feel very good to get bad news and then share that news, I challenge every applicant who has used the site in this application cycle to come back on M9 (or whenever your news trickles in) and accurately report their results. For 99% of you, your identity is anonymous to others…so who cares?

Why do I ask this? Because I think the self-selection that goes on post-M9 tends to skew the reporting of results…making it seem like a majority of applicants get into the schools to which they applied, no matter how selective. Which we know is not true for the body of applicants.

The other thing I want to reinforce to those who DO get good news on M9 is this: DON’T BE A JERK.

Don’t gloat, don’t get into comparative discussions (my school is better than yours), don’t talk about how you gamed the system and won (Jackson Hole ski vacations anyone?), etc. It’s just not good form, and I can almost guarantee you’ll get beat up a bit in threads if you choose to go this route."

I will go one step further. For those with multiple acceptances, feel free to be happy. But the time to post your thread of “Should I choose X vs. Y” is not this week. (And I will delete such posts). Spend a week to reflect. If possible go on revisits. Then post your question if still undecided. Additionally, I ask that you wait a week to post any “Who’s going to XYZ” or “Tell Me About XYX/What classes should I take/What dorms are best?” Those too, will be deleted.

Additionally, while some posts may seem really important to the poster, in reality, they are duplicative. Examples include “Will I get off the waitlist?” “Did anyone hear from XYZ?” “When will acceptance packages come?” Such posts will be merged in with existing threads without notice or comment.

Noted lol :slight_smile:

hey any suggestions on BS’s still accepting applications or could try to apply for my son who would be a sophmore. He got waitlisted at SPS, PEA, and Blair.

That information is available on the Wait list thread, however, I have linked TABS schools with rolling admissions below:

Thanks for letting us know. Didn’t mean to be insensitive. 30 days is not a lot of time to make for many what is a very big decision. My apologies.

@futuresobrite 30 days is an eternity! For all of our day schools, we are also dealing with less than a 7 day difference between notification and deadline to commit in writing to the same decision.

I’ll take the 30 day period ANY DAY.

Furthering my point. ?

@futuresobrite I don’t mean to be rude but 30 days is literally a whole month. What more can you ask for?

More to the point, it is what it is.

Even if they never set foot on the campus, applicants should have had some knowledge of the schools before applying, so there should be some preferences already. Regardless, decisions will be better formed after revisits (if you can attend). For those that can’t attend revisits, waiting a week to ask opinions will not kill you, it still leaves 24 days to decide.

Oh, and shopping for dorm stuff and posting your decorating ideas on Instagram - too soon guys.

@CC4file Does rolling admission open mean that kids can apply now for freshman to these schools now. What about schools not listed in the link? Could one reach out to them as well?

Hi all! I am very new to this forum, but have been lurking for awhile. Quick question about all the acronyms for schools. I think I have most of them, but is PA-Phillips Andover or a different school? I’ve looked at past post to figure it out, but haven’t had any luck. Sorry for my rookie question.

yes

PA=Phillips Academy (the legal name)=Andover.

@GradEdD Rolling admissions means that the schools on that link are accepting applications for freshman (or in many cases high school in general). While you are able to submit applications to schools that aren’t on that list they will only add an applicant that would have been accepted to the waitlist as they do not have any open spots (unless this student has ties to the school in some way, but even that varies from school to school). Keep in mind, however, that rolling admissions does not mean these schools are in anyway ‘less than’ the schools we discuss on CC, many of them are still very selective and well regarded within the boarding school community.

It is true that many schools are not listed on that link, the best thing to do if you are interested in a school that is not on that link is to call the admissions office and ask to speak to an admissions officer or the director of admissions. They will be able to give you the only real answer for whether that school would still accept an application. In my experience, you will often find that schools that are very highly regarded that have small boarding populations (<35%) are often more willing to take boarding apps instead of late day student apps. Good luck and feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Thanks @cc4life. would you please pm me if you can.

@GradEdD Done!
