Here’s a question: let’s say your test scores are high, GPA kind of high, enrolled in many APs, but you are involved in more than 10 extracurriculars with four or five leadership roles. What does that look like on an application?

Piano Lessons

Voice Lessons

Leadership: 0, although people have been telling me Link Crew counts because we act as leaders for freshmen transitioning into high school

So. Even though I don’t do anything “special”, at least all of my ECs fall under music or people/service (wasn’t even on purpose… lol).

Not counting the many clubs i’ve joined and don’t really care about, 3?

Leadership: GSA, Blogger
Other: Library volunteer

14maxwellm, how high is your GPA? Enrolling in 10 ecs with 5 leadership positions and still managing to get high test scores and grades seems impressive!

Since we seem to be listing, here’s what I do and have done. I suck at commitment, and and I’m moving next year so I can’t even continue a lot of my junior-year stuff.

Volunteering at Safety Town (10)
School musical ensemble (10)
Science fair (10)
Volunteering at public library (9, 10, 11)
Piano lessons (9, 10, 11)
Alateen (9, 10, 11) ==> dunno if it’s an actual EC but it’s gotten me public speaking opportunities
Co-founded book club at public library (10, 11) ==> my only leadership
Chemical engineering mentorship (11)
Scholastic Bowl (11)
Environmental Club (11)
Working at McDonald’s (11)
Volunteering at local arboretum (12)
Local science camps (12)

I’ll probably sell stuff at a local farmer’s market this summer, and do another mentorship. I’m moving to Cleveland so I’m sure there will be more stuff to do there.

11 (Quiz bowl, SADD, Student Council, NHS, Drama(Plays/Musical), Improv, Film Making, Youth Basketball Statician, Painting, Service, Guitar)

Sports year-round, all 4 years. And NHS, Knowledge Bowl, some volunteering, science club one year, tutor one year, organized a 5K one year. Most of these are insane, though I’m not suprised. Sports is the only time-consuming thing, the others were only an hour or two a week at most. Sports varied, but probably averaged out to 2 hours a day, including weekends.

@serendi A 3.7 I believe. I think a 3.83 weighted. My school’s weightings are low.

MUN
Debate
Newspaper
Squash Team
Tutoring Club

Leadership in Three

Currently a sophomore!

In school (leadership positions are marked with ): 4
- Art Club
- Math Club*
- Equity Committee*
- DECA

Outside of School: 2
- A sport (my main EC, I spend ~20 hours/week doing it)
- Volunteering at a centre for disabled children, at an elementary school and at a cultural organization (~5 hours per week, ~300 total so far)

Total: 6

And that’s it…unless you count writing math/science contests and summer science programs as ECs :P

My school offers none So everything is on my own.
- Help a family with special needs kids
- Started an organization that entertains special needs kids on Saturday’s for 2 hours
- Organized a blood drive with the Red Cross
- Bake for families in my community that have sick children/parents
- Help out families with sick children/parents- housework, babysitting, etc.
6 Ran two marathons and biked two tours to raise funds for an organization that helps children with cancer. I’m constantly fundraising and have raised over $10,000. I also volunteer for them. - Voluteer at a hospital
- Self taught piano and guitar

Can you tell I want to be a doctor??
I’m looking at top schools. Looking only at EC’s, do I have a chance or do I need to improve them? Most of them are sporadic and done as needed; only a few are done at a specific time every week.

No, I’m not going to post the number of extracurricular activities that I do. In the grand scheme of things, I’m surprised that people reply to these threads.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. 7. 7 extracurricular activities.

Please someone get that reference.

“No, I’m not going to post the number of extracurricular activities that I do. In the grand scheme of things, I’m surprised that people reply to these threads.”

Nice irony.
But considering the general character of the Internet I don’t see why it’s surprising. :D

Just wondering, those of you who have like 15 ECs, how extensively do you do each? For example, if you were asked to write as much as many paragraphs as you could about your ECs, how many paragraphs would you have? I have from 4-10 ECs, depending on what you really count as an extra curricular, e.g., I’m in AP Studio Art so I’m consistently working on new art pieces, but would that really count? I don’t know, and I don’t really care if it’s an “official” extra curricular, honestly. I’d do it anyways.
Only for about three of my extracurriculars do I consistently worry or think about them throughout the week. The rest are either less frequent or I don’t hold a leadership position in them. For example, if you asked me to write about Science Olympiad, my art, or Asian Club, I could write you a thesis, but for the other things I could maybe give you a page at most

“Just wondering, those of you who have like 15 ECs, how extensively do you do each? For example, if you were asked to write as much as many paragraphs as you could about your ECs, how many paragraphs would you have?”

In response to ^ (sorry, I forgot how to quote)

I only have 6 ECs (that I consider ECs at least…everyone defines them differently. For example, I noticed one person included stuff like the Duke of Edinburgh award program, but I didn’t). One of them (my main sport EC) I’ve spent around 7000 hours on (throughout 8 years), and I could write pages upon pages about it. I could also write a few pages about volunteering, Math Club, and Equity Committee, but probably only a couple of pages max on DECA and Art Club.

“I’m in AP Studio Art so I’m consistently working on new art pieces, but would that really count?”

It’s part of school, so it’s not an “extracurricular” activity. But it’s still a valuable use of your time that shows passion for art.
