Post Vanderbilt Plugs Here

Hilsa, it sounds like you need to be sure to take both Country Music and History of Rock for your AXLE requirements. D isn't a country fan, but it seems like anyone who comes to Nashville but doesn't know country music ought to at least learn about it - plus, it counts as a U.S. History AXLE requirement - how cool is that?

I'll listen to old school country. =] But watered down pop country, no. I come from a school where half the class (including my friends) listens to a) progressive and classic rock, b) indie, c) 80s [Talking Heads, New Order, They Might Be Giants, etc]. Country just isn't part of the culture. Though, it definitely is at the neighboring high school.

History of Rock sounds fun, though! I really don't like US History (I'm a Euro girl) so anything that gets me out of strictly political and economics US History would be pretty rad. Thanks for the info, kelsmom! Now let's just hope I get in!

History of Rock doesn't get you out of USH - country does, but not rock (guess because it's heavily influenced by the UK). I forget what HofR counts for - probably Humanities & the Creative Arts.

NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well. I'd rather take it than another US History class. And it will probably give me a better perspective on country music. My parents will laugh in disbelief if they find out I signed up for a country music history class. Haha. Though, it sounds like it'd probably have to do more with people and culture, which is something that definitely appeals to me (I've seen I Love the 80s and all its VH1 spawn so many times on VH1...probably over 1000 hours of my life).

History of rock is an HCA credit.

My D, who still does not especially like country music, actually enjoyed the class. The class traced the roots of country & how it has developed through the years, as well as how country has influenced other genres.

I have always attended NYC public schools, so country music has never been part of the culture...but I discovered it on my own when I was around 13 and fell absolutely in love with it. It was actually my common app. essay topic :] I'll listen to oldies like Johnny Cash or even watered-down pop country like Taylor Swift...but I'm more into the moderates, like Brad Paisley or Keith Urban. ANYWAY, I meant to say that if I end up at Vandy, expect to see me in the History of Country Music course. Didn't expect to rant so much xD

yeah, i'm not gonna lie, I would rather put my weiner in a meat grinder than listen to her music hehehe

Hahahahaha. Keen, you sound like my friends.

haha, maybe we will be friends if I get accepted!

Lyla Garrity got her Vandy acceptance on Friday Night Lights!

^^Yeah, but as they say "Be careful what you wish for." It's been nothing but hell for her since then. OTOH I love the way Riggins is stepping up.

I figure that she ought to appeal and she'll get a full ride. Dad isn't earning any money, blew the savings.

I'm pulling for her.

Anyone else notice that 1) she got her acceptance in a small envelope, which doesnt happen, and 2) the logo at the top was not the Vandy one.

i bet the producers could have called vandy for legit stuff to make it more realistic, hey it's free advertising.

also, the show apparently doesn't know about vandys really good financial aid.

Since it is December on the show, she must have been accepted ED.

Have’nt received Decision letter yet. Anyone else in the same boat? Are all the letters being sent by Priority Mail, including rejects?

Only accept. goes priority - rejected and waitlist regular. Even priority gets screwed up sometimes - wishing you the best.

This is an interesting one. I have a distant relation I recently spoke to; he is a senile old man who was an emissary of the British crown to the Saudi royal family back in the day. He asked me where I was attending university, replied Vanderbilt, he then went on a 10 minute slurred heavily accented speech about how phenomenal it is to have a Vanderbilt tutor me and if I know what’s good for me, I should marry into the family.

This is pretty ridiculous(ly hilarious) and I’m only posting to bump my favorite thread, but this is in fact a plug because it shows that even though Vanderbilt’s international prestige is a little different than its domestic prestige, at least people know the name!

Lyla is going to vandy next year.

it will be interesting to see how far they go into her college life…it would be pretty cool if they come film on campus next year

Well, Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls) went to Yale but they did not film any of the show there. I think they used part of the Pomona campus at times.

Yeah, but it’s Yale…I think I speak for everyone when I say a scene set at Vandy would be a lot more interesting.
