I am sorry if this is not the brightest of questions, but I just have to ask it. As all of you know the deadline for so many schools is Jan 1, postmark. Of course, Jan. 1 is a Sunday, so if I put a application in the mailbox on the 1st will it be postmarked on Mon. as being turned in on the 1st or not. How does this work? Thank you in advance.

US postal service is closed on Jan 2nd (Monday). So if you put your app in the mail on the 1st, it will be postmarked for the 3rd. I think it's in your best interest to apply online and BE SAFE

Since January 1 is a Sunday, mail will not be postmarked. However, some post offices will collect the mail on holidays (such as Jan. 2) and postmark it for that day. Unfortunately, that still makes the postmark late for the Princeton application. If you do need to mail the application rather than send it online for some reason, the good news is that few colleges actually check the postmark unless your application comes in several days after the deadline.

You might consider using those automated postal machine things at the post office...it prints the date on the stamp, so that may work for deadline purposes.
