Potential Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholars

They told us that they don’t track visits when we couldn’t make it to PreVU.

@wrights1994, that is an interesting question. My immediate response was that I don’t think they matter. However, not knowing how decisions are made, I don’t know if they “check” on the interview reports. DS did have an alumni interview.
I agree with @SCNomad that Vandy said that they don’t track visits.

My D did not visit until after receiving the scholarship offer. She attempted to interview but was not able to actually schedule an interview. So I would not worry if you weren’t able to visit or interview.

We did visit and S had a really good interview… really good. So since he has not been invited for any other big scholarships I am really hoping this may be the one. Hoping the interviewer has some influence. He did say that he finds out if S gets in before S does. I found that interesting.

I know they look at your application file. So the report that the interviewer submitted will be in that, but I don’t know how much of a factor it is.

Once you get to the level of 34-36 ACT, what in particular are they looking for in selecting who gets the scholarship?

great question meggy123… as it reads as someone has said above, it looks like you have a 50/50 chance? But what separates one half from the other?

Leadership, extra-curricular achievements and essays I’m guessing.

The optimist view:

If the freshman class last year was 1605 students and 132 CV and 56 Chancellor’s scholarships were offered, then a maximum 188 of 1605 (nearly 12%) of freshman could have received a full scholarship. This does not account for scholarships offered by Vandy and rejected by students choosing not to attend Vandy. I would assume most would take it, so maybe the number is closer to 10% of the 1605 freshmen.

Do you think that to be awarded one of these amazing merit scholarships you have to have had a super noteworthy accomplishment (i.e starting your own business or being a published writer) or can you be a normal student with a wide range of fairly solid accomplishments?

What is the minimum SAT or ACT that past recipients had?

@Meggy123, my D is a freshman CV scholar. She didn’t start her own business or write the great American novel. She was an all around excellent student and test taker (just like everyone else at Vanderbilt), and she had some very specific ECs in which she was heavily involved. I will say that her ECs presented a very clear picture of what drives my D and what her goals are, but they were not quite curing cancer or anything of that nature.

Hope that helps.

@Belle315 - Thank you so much! Definitely reassuring to hear. Congrats to your daughter!

Do you guys think that being super involved/good at sports will influence the committee in some way? I’ve won three state championships (one individual) in tennis and cross country, and I’ve been a vital/leading member of those teams since 9th grade. Will the fact that I’m this involved in sports and still have the top class ranking and great scores affect my chances?

Just want to throw this out there since it’s being discussed…Vanderbilt says 50% of students in that score range get merit aid, not necessarily CV scholarship

Good point. I would think that the $5,000 award for National Merit Finalist and the $2500 award for NM semi-finalist would be in that statistic since they are considered merit aid.

Yes, that’s what I had been wondering. 50% receive merit awards! but how many of those are the big scholarships? The NMF and NMSF are already pretty known since the kids have their scores. But there is a big difference between $5k and full tuition! If it is even close to 50 % with those scores that get Cornelius then I really have fingers crossed!

Does anyone know the exact date these decisions will be released this year? And also the RD decision date?

I’m a CV scholarship applicant from India.

@Kashallover‌ They haven’t released any official exact dates. But for RD I’m guessing March 27 since they usually release them the Friday before April 1st.

@musicgeek97‌ Thank you so much!
