Potential Medical Disqualifications

My doctor is talking about giving me a prescription for Accutane to help with Acne. I was wondering if there are any potential disqualifications that can happen by using or getting a prescription of Accutane?

None that I know of. I was on increasing doses of tetracycline to Amoxacilin (sp?) for many years. I stopped taking acne meds at 1600 mg a day of Amoxacilin my sophomore year of high school. As far as I know, besides some of the side-effects that Accutane can have, you should be ok since its not something like ritalin which really underlies a real medical problem. Short answer, it shouldn't.

Accutane is not just any acne med though. It can affect the liver and I believe that current use is disqualifying.

Go to the dodmerb forum at:

You will get a definitive answer.

are you sure its having used or trying to use while coming to USAFA? Because using meds coming here is often DQing. I do believe that use of Accutane requires blood tests, so if they stay clear I don't see why it wouldn't be at least waiverable.

D111.00-Acne/Accutane use-Acne, severe, extensive or currently treated with Accutane

That's the disqualification code from DoDMERB. Here's a list of disqualifications.

So, CURRENT use or severe acne....

Safe bet is not to unless you HAVE to.

i know they issue it to ppl here, so i'd just wait and let them give it to you once you get here.

Thanks. Since my acne isn't that bad I'll probably wait until I get to the Academy so I don't have to worry about the hassle of disqualifications and waivers. I did hear that they issue it in the Air Force to people, so that might be a possibility once I get there.
