I just had a quick question about some prescription medications. If someone could please let me know the best course of action, I would most appreciate it.

Here is the issue:

I just started taking a prescription pill twice a day to help cure a minor acne problem. Do I have to declare this to Dodmerb or USMA, or can I just let it go, being as that I am only taking the med because I want to and not because I have to?

If I continue to take this medication, do I need to declare it to USMA before I arrive on R-Day?

You should declare it. They'll be doing drug tests when you arrive and no matter what the drug is it may/will show up in some way. And you have nothing to lose in reporting your acne medicine.

I remember a mobster on parole in NJ ate a poppyseed bagel and was drug tested as part of his parole. They threw him back into jail because the poppy seeds made it look like he was on heroin.

So for a prescription we just recently started taking and plan to continue taking while at West Point, do we notify Dodmerb, West Point or both?

If you don't they WILL confiscate any prescription meds that you bring with you to R Day and they will ask questions you are better off having them ask now rather than later---

Okay so I filled out the DODMERB "Present Health" form, alerting them to my perscription acne meds and a future minor tooth-smoothing treatment. I also told Major Viles at admissions via email. Will this be sufficient, or could I still get in trouble down the road?

What else happens now? Do they re-review my medical history at DODMERB and qualify me? Could I be disqualified for perscription meds for acne?

They are going to see if your diagnosis fits your prescription and if they can support the prescription there (their pharmacy). They'll also look at if your primary physician AND dermatologist came up with the same diagnosis.

That should be good, I would think. They'll advise you further.

Thanks for your response. I also replied to your pm.

Okay, I will wait and see if DODMERB or USMA have any problems with my prescription.

The only thing about my situation is that I was not diagnosed by any doctors or dermatologist. I just did a one-time visit out of choice to a local specialist who prescribed me the medications. I just sent in the DODMERB form listing the medications and said that I was in excellent health and using the meds for minor acne treatment. I also included the medication info sheets so they would know what I was taking. Hopefully it is enough; I really don't want to be disqualified or turned back over such a small matter.

I hope the acne medication you are taking is NOT Accutane. Accutane is disqualifying since it can affect your liver. I think you need to be off it for 6 months and have blood tests to prove normal liver function.

You need to check with DoDMERB and the academy.
