I'm attending Fairleigh Dickinson University and I am just about to start my third semester. Today my student invoice arrived and my parents and I immediately noticed that the scholarship I had received before isn't listed. It's odd because I was able to surpass the 3.5 GPA that's required and it's renewable so we know it wasn't a one time thing. We also noticed that the grants and loans that are listed are higher than previous semesters. Could the increase in grants and loans have affected my eligibility for the scholarship?

It's a shame that this arrived on a Friday because now I'm going to have to worry through the weekend until I can contact the offices on Monday. I also would have assumed that if my scholarship was taken away, they would have contacted me sooner now that we're less than a month from starting.

Good you’re aware. My only advice is to communicate with the finaid office. Tell them yo “where was I supposed to ***** the money from? Can’t you tell I’m busy learnin” No seriously tell them it’s not happening, they’ll either feel bad or you’ll be in the same place you are now but no worse of… begin your awesome appeal letter now!

Take a breath, wait until Monday, and call and ASK. Mistakes happen, and that may be all you’re dealing with, so don’t panic.

But let this be a life lesson for you: important letters that arrive over the weekend should never be opened any earlier than SUNDAY evening. If it’s good news, the wait won’t kill you . . . and if it’s bad news, you only have to wait until morning to sort it out.

Knowing almost nothing about your circumstances, kepi, I suspect it’s just an error in the billing office at Farleigh Dickinson, and it can be straightened out. If you call them on Monday and say, “I was awarded the [name of scholarship] Scholarship, and it’s supposed to be renewable for four years. I know I had a high enough GPA to renew it, but I don’t see it on my term bill for fall 2013,” they’ll probably get it corrected pretty quickly.

One other thought, though: for my daughter’s scholarship at another university, she must not only meet a GPA requirement, but also take 30 or more credits per academic year. If you have a similar requirement, did you meet it?

Sorry you’re in this situation, though. I would be very antsy all weekend.

^^I was wondering the same about the credit hour requirement. I know my daughter’s required a certain number of hours each year as well as the GPA.

If you met the GPA requirement and any other requirements, definitely call/email first thing Monday.

Sometimes scholarship listings lag behind. I had that happen to me a few times in undergrad and they were added on a short time later (needed to verify credits/gpa/whatever).

Just try to relax. It’ll get sorted out :). (I know, easier said than done)

My daughter’s school’s financial aid and billing offices never seemed to communicate with each other, even though they were across the hall from each other. Every year I had to call and remind the billing office about the scholarships, and then get an amended bill.

Call them POLITELY on Monday and ask about the scholarship.
