Although it's pretty random, throughout high school I have really enjoyed making pottery. When I head out to Pomona this fall as a freshman I am wondering what kind of opportunities I might have to pursue this hobby of mine. I have looked at Pomona's web site for anything having to do with pottery, ceramics, etc. but haven't found anything. I suspect that if Pomona students can enroll for courses at any of the 5 colleges, maybe one of them would offer a class in ceramics or pottery. I really am pretty clueless to how the whole registration process goes so if any students could give some advice I would really appreciate it. Do any of you know other students who take art courses for fun, even though they have no intention whatsoever of majoring in art? And, where should I be looking to figure out whether a pottery course is offered at any of the 5-C's? I doubt there is much of a chance someone who looks at this post will know someone that currently or has taken pottery, but would I even be able to take on a class like pottery in addition to they typical four courses per semester?

Thanks in advance for those who can respond to such an obscure question!

Scripps has ceramics courses - and I know that Pomona students can take fine arts courses at Scripps.

I'm sure Pomona has ceramics courses, but I don't know details. Scripps definitely does, and they're open to all. Also (and again, I only speak for Scripps but the same may very easily apply to Pomona), if you're registered for a class you are given access to the studios at all hours, so...that's a perk.

You should be able to find a course catalog online from any of the Claremont school pages, and the catalog will include classes on all campuses. Try going to www.scrippscollege.edu and selecting "Academic Portal" on the right hand side of the page. Choose "student" in the upper right and then choose "Course Catalog" or "Course Schedule" or whatever it's called...should be somewhere on the right, midway down. I'm happy to attempt a better explanation later if that doesn't work for you :o)

freshman year you can only take 4 classes a semester. well i'm taking 5, but you have to petition. a little while before you come out here you'll be able to get on the web portal and look to see what classes are available/closed

Both Scripps and Pitzer offer ceramics/pottery. Pomona used to have a ceramics program, but it replaced it with digital art two years ago. Pomona students are allowed to take those classes, but there are limited spots for Pomona students (and the same probably goes for the Scripps classes). If there is room though (it seems like there is for the Pitzer classes next semester), they'll let students off the waitlist. If you do take pottery, it would count toward one of your four classes that you are limited to as a first-year. Art classes (especially at Pomona) are known to eat up a lot of your time, but it's probably possible to do four classes plus an art one if you really wanted to (but only as a sophomore, junior, or senior).

kishere--

Welcome to CC and congratulations on heading to Pomona!

Thank you very much for all of your responses. That was incredibly helpful. I've looked at Pomona's 2004-2005 course catalog and no ceramics class was to be found, but those directions to Scripps web sites led me to their course descriptions. Thanks again.
