PowerOutages at Bowdoin

This is the second, possibly the third time this year that some of the campus has been without power. The web site seems concerned with the fact that the non-essential employees don’t need to show up – but what about the students!!! Are the dorms equipped with auxillary power that keeps the dorms warm??? I’m a little concerned about this.

All of the dorms have generators so we still get lighting in the hallways and there’s still heat in all of the buildings. Of course, no electricity is currently in the dorm rooms themselves so the refrigerators are defrosting, tv’s aren’t working, alarm clocks have shut off, etc

Academic buildings, the dining halls and the student union (where I am writing from right now actually) also run off of generators so whenever the power goes out most students go there to recharge their cell phones, laptops,etc in the outlets throughout the building.

Up until a few minutes ago there was no internet access and the bowdoin website, along with student features like email, are not accessible. We’ve had a few power outages so far this year but this has been the longest. It’s inconvenient (especially with those who have papers to work on) but everyone’s in the same boat so everyone copes with it together and tries to help each other out (what’s that they say about misery loving company? lol).

Thanks for the inside info govman – you’re a scholar and a gentleman (as my DGF would have said)…

The homepage of the college website had a message that didn’t differentiate between heat and lights. It read “…The South campus loop continues to be without power (8:30AM) and this outage is expected to last at least two more hours. This includes Farley, Watson, Lubin, Stowe, Howard, Coles Tower, Thorne, Jewett, Chamberlain, Burton Little, Osher, West, Museum of Art, Visual Arts Center, Hubbard, Hawthorne-Longfellow, Moulton, Moore, Winthrop, Maine, Coleman, Appleton, Hyde, Banister, Chapel, Heating Plant, Morrell Gym and Sargent Gym. Non-essential employees working in the above buildings are not expected to report to work until noon. Students and Faculty: Please note that all classes scheduled in the above buildings until noon are also canceled…”

My DD won’t be there until next year, but as an out-of-area parent, I was beginning to wonder about dorm heat during these outages. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.

I live in Howell, and while this is not a usual situation (we’re on the town grid, so we tend to get power back faster than campus) we didn’t have power for almost 48 hours last week. Howell is an older building, so it doesn’t have generators (yet)-- thus the emergency lights started going out after about four hours and it was getting distinctly chilly by the next morning.

Facilities arrived and installed a generator for heat the next afternoon, however, so even if the worst does happen, I think you can rely on Bowdoin to take care of your kids. :}
