Most hotels won't take reservations more than 1 year in advance. Even most house rentals only go out only 2 years in advance. Deposits that far in advance are risky because the property could be re-sold or change management. I would, however, recommend you do whatever you can to secure Herndon week NOW (if not already too late!).

Good call Dad2B'2010! By the way, have you got that date, I'm slipping.

Staying at the Hampton Inn for PPW, good grief it is expensive out there.

I'm not kidding about reserving now for Graduation.

We booked at the Days Inn across from the Annapolis Mall during PPW. Believe it or not, we weren't the only ones.

If hotels are not doing more than a year in advance now, I don't know, but we had our reservations in four years early.

It's nuts, but hey, this is Navy! :D

Z - Herndon is done at the end of plebe year, correct? Sometime next May?

Yes, sir. Herndon goes during Commissioning Week, normally in late May.

Thank you, I just checked USNA calendar and nothing showing as yet.

I might give our RD a call to get a hard date. I hadn't been thinking "that" far in advance but, it sure makes sense.

Also, may give the daughter a little more incentive to study knowing I'm banking on her survival - LOL!

You're right about that! The cost of living is high in Southern California, so I expect other places (except Tokyo, New York, London, and Paris) to be less expensive. NOT Annapolis, especially at certain times of the year when parents roll into town. I'm at Loew's for Herndon and I called the other day to confirm my reservation @ $199 a night. They confirmed my reservation for $410 a night (my roundtrip airfare on United from Los Angeles)--until I reminded them of the rate they had quoted me earlier. (I could stay at the Ritz in Paris for $410 a night! off season ;)) Believe me, I would camp before I would pay that for a hotel room in Annapolis (unless I had 10 family members staying in the same room). The trick is to reserve EARLY. That said, I don't think you can reserve a room more than a year in advance.

Please don't take this the wrong way, because I know it's just a joke, but don't even joke about that sort of thing with her. She needs to KNOW there is no pressure from you for her to stay if she doesn't want to be there.

Sounds alarmist, but you'd be surprised how something as innocent as that can be remembered by a Plebe when the chips are down, and it can backfire.

Sorry. Shifted into my Plebe-Protection Mode, there. :)

Keep it coming Z.

I have been reading about how NOT to respond during those precious phone calls and visits. Have to make sure "parent mode" doesn't take over.

usna09mom - is Herndon the last week of May? Do you have the dates?

wvdad,
your daughter is going to thrive at USNA! The female mids are like sisters and they have so much fun together. If she is involved in church activities, she can usher at church services during the summer. Also, the chaplain corps provides plebes valuable support during the summer and throughout their time at USNA. Tell her to start planning her Halloween outfit now!

wvdad,
The end-of-year activities, Sea Trials, Herndon, for the fourth class (plebes) take place the week of May 15. Commissioning is the following week.

It'll be tough. Lord knows how I'll respond if ever put in that situation myself. But from having been at the receiving end (both good - mom, and bad - dad), all I can tell you is to be there for them and let them know you support them, but that THEY have to make the call. All you can do is help them not make a rash decision based upon whatever BS they happen to be facing at the moment.

In short, never make them think you want them to quit, and never make them feel pressured to stay against their own will because of what you will think of them afterwards.

The week of May 15th?

Sheesh! It used to be June (hence the name June Week). I graduated late May (the 29th), now it's a week sooner.

Pretty soon they'll do Graduation during Spring Break!! ;)

Graduation week is just before Memorial Day. Sea trials and Herndon are the preceeding Tuesday and Thursday (week prior to graduation week, just before Ring Dance), respectively.

Thanks usna09mom & Dad2B'2010. Going to start working on reservations tonight.

I think she's very excited usna09mom. It was about two weeks after NASS that she came to me and said USNA WAS what she wanted.

Z - good to get a perspective from "one who has been". I've always attempted to be very supportive in my kids endeavors but have not pushed in any certain direction. Keep your word, finish what you start and be true to yourself.
