I’m looking to take a Pre-Calculus course online next summer, and I’m wondering if anyone knows of any good inexpensive ones. I also did find one, but I don’t know if it’s a good one or not. Has anyone heard anything about The Virtual High School? https://my.vhslearning.org/PublicCourseDescription.aspx?c=256
I’ve never heard of The Virtual High School; how did you hear of them? If this source was recommended to you from your counselor or someone else, then maybe go for it, but I wouldn’t trust this online school unless you have found some solid backing to its teaching (superior ratings, etc.). The only virtual school I’m familiar with is FLVS (mainly because I live in Florida ehe). I haven’t taken pre-calc on FLVS, but I have heard relatively positive reviews about the course. FLVS Global School is $400 for one semester and you can take as many courses during that semester as long as you can meet the assignment requirement (3-4 assignments/week).
I took the BYU Independent Learning course for Precalc over the summer- it was recommended to me by my counselor then. One semester was less than $200, and I believe this program is rather well known.
I felt well prepared for AP Calc in the school year following that summer.
Talk to your GC about options.
@silmaril I talked to my guidance counselor and she recommended BYU for any outside of regular school courses, so it does work at my school. Do you remember how long each semester was over the summer? I couldn’t find it on the website. Also did you take both semesters?
@kcollege1820 the above link is the catalog for all hs courses that they offer- you can use the subject drop box to pick mathematics and choose your precalc course from there. Also, under the Programs tab at the top of page, there’s an FAQ for the program.
With BYU there are some courses that are teacher led and some that are self-guided. With self-guided you can go at your own pace, which is what I did. I completed the course roughly between June-end of August. You can do online or paper- whichever is more comfortable for you, though I believe there’s a price difference. I think you can contact your instructor with questions, but I never did that so I’m not familiar with that aspect.
I only took Precalc Part 2 (Precalc 043). My GC recommended only the second part since my high school’s Algebra II class (which I had already taken) covered part 1. You should talk with your GC or a math teacher to confirm how this fits into your school’s curriculum.
