What is pre-commerce? I am assuming that it is not an actual major, but the set of classes that one needs to fulfill in order to apply to the comm school? If I listed my major as econ on the application, is it too late to follow the pre-comm track?

What happens to those who follow the pre-comm track and don't get accepted to McIntire? Do they need to start from scratch and finish another major in just two years?

If someone could clear up some of my confusion, that would be great :) Thanks!

You start as an arts and sciences college student. You take the comm school prerequsities. If a person is not admitted into commerce school, many become an econ major. The classes taken during the first 2 years (such as calculus, economics, writing, statistics and foreign language) typically include classes that work towards a degree for many majors.

It would be a good idea to have a backup major in mind when you pick classes 2nd year. For example, several other majors want you to have successfully taken 2 or so classes in a subject before you can declare that subject as your major.

The post above explains it well. If you are unsure about getting into Comm School, take Econ 301 in your 4th semester (spring 2nd yr) and that sets you up for Econ major.

Many students start pre-comm and then realize its not for them and switch majors, so it’s not a very hard thing to do!
