Pre-Med Advising

I've seen a lot of posts here emphasizing the importance of good advising at a pre-med school. For example, Duke has been mentioned many times as having great advising.

But how, exactly, do you judge the quality of a pre-med school's advising? And which schools have the best advising? There aren't many rankings pertaining to that aspect of pre-med schools.

Thank you!

ask the students - for example I know I am not alone in saying that Brown’s pre-med advising is bad. On the other hand, I think the overall experience of being a pre-med at Brown is unmatched by any other school.

What defines “bad” pre-med advising? Poor communication? Poorly staffed office?

Bad advice would sum it up at some UCs. My DDs was very cookie cutter, meaning the people did not understand the big picture, they presented a list on which they had been trained, but they did not necessarily understand how it really works. She also had mentor profs, assigned advisers each term, give diametrically opposing advice, in the fall, “take class A” in the spring, “why in the world did you take class A, that is all wrong”

Excellent pre-med advising can be found on CC with a smattering of SDN for some specifics

in my case, bad advice meant not understanding the differences between MD/PhD and MD admissions, being unwilling to actually advise, being too busy to track down, and going on vacation during the height of application season.
