Greetings,
I have several questions to ask.
First of all, Im a pakistani american citizen who has done her A and O levels from here in Pakistan.

I got 3 As in A levels and 7 As with 1 A* in my O levels.
This is the equal of high school education in the US.
I don’t have much extracurriculars in my high school years & Im giving the SAT 1 with little prep this summer.

I want to return to college in the US and pursue the career of a doctor.
The questions:

What would be my GPA according to the American system of education?
Above is British.

I want to do pre-med & hunter college seems affordable plus im hoping on a scholarship or financial aid… Is it a good choice to do undergrad from hunter ? please share your experiences & if you know anyone who has cleared the MCAT after doing their Pre-med from hunter … please share your views to the best of your knowledge.

Also, do students from public colleges go on to study in med school and if yes… which colleges are best for doing your under-grad from the public colleges… ?

If I maintain my GPA in pre-med & do extracurricular with volunteering hours during my study in a public college … does it matter that I go to a public college … how much does that matter … the repute of the college … and where does Hunter stand in terms of the college repute?

Thank you … I’d really appreciate it if you answer these questions and please share your view on my course of action.

I dont know how the gpa will calculate, but it sounds like a 4.0

You are OOS for Hunter, so dont expect much/any FA. Does Hunter give much in scholarships for OOS? look at their website. If they give some, it may only be a few thousand towards the OOS COA of $30k+

How much will your parents pay each year?

<<<
which colleges are best for doing your under-grad from the public colleges… ?
<<<<

Most med students are from publics, so that is not a problem.
Any good college is good enough. med schools dont care…it is all about grades, mcat score, medically related ec’s, LORs, etc.

Premed is NOT a major. what will you be majoring in?

the premed prereqs are just lower division bio, chem, physics, calc, etc…nothing fancy…taught well at most schools.

My SAT score is 1790 and I got my acceptance from Brooklyn college, but haven’t heard from hunter, city, Baruch, queens or York as of yet. Is that ok?? For the spring 2015 semester.
Also, I will get to know about my financial aid package soon so I’m not very much worried about that. I want to do my pre med from hunter or city. Do I have a chance?

All the schools you mentioned are part of CUNY system, and with exception of special programs (like Sophie Davis at CCNY), you do have a chance in all of them. Pre-med is indeed not a major, so what major did you write in your application? You can be an art or music major and still go to med school. Why are you so interested in Hunter? I don’t think Hunter (or any CUNY schools for that matter), give that much financial aid for OOS students. Your SAT score is also not that great, so I am not sure if you will get any merit aid.

As far as medical school is concern, you need you keep your GPA up, do a lot of volunteer work at hospitals (like shadow a doctor), do some undergrad research, and more importantly get a good score in the MCAT to get into med school.

OOS is Out of State. If you are considered a New York resident, you would pay in-state tuition at a public NY college. So for Hunter, it will cost less if you are a NY resident.

Your family lives out of the country, so you’re OOS for NY. That means that you’ll be charged the high OOS rate. You won’t get aid to cover that high OOS rate.

You’re a US citizen, but you are NOT a NY resident. NY residents pay taxes to get the low rates there. You will get charged the high OOS rates.

How much will your family pay each year? If they won’t pay $30k+ per year, then Hunter won’t be affordable.

How will you get your FA pkg soon? Aren’t you applying for next fall?

I don’t think you realize how much Hunter is going to charge you. You’re OOS so they’re not going to give you much aid.

I ran the Net Price Calculator for Hunter for an OOS student.

If you are low income, then you will have a LOT of uncovered costs. The cost is over $30k per year and you’d only get a Pell Grant ($5700) and a student loan ($5500), and maybe some work-study of $1500.

The above is if you are VERY low income. Even so, you would have over half of your costs uncovered.

Ok, why don’t you say it as is in the first place. You should be receiving FA information already, have you filed FAFSA? Based on your stats I think you should be ok with Hunter or CCNY. Its hard to convert gpa, just report as is and the College will translate it for you.

Premed is not a degree in the USA, Med school is a graduate curriculum in the USA. As a “premed” potential UG student, you can choose ANY major but you have to complete the “pre-med” classes in order to apply for med school. Once you got into the UG such as Hunter, there are pre-med advisers that will guide you the courses related pre-med you need to take. Don’t worry about it now.
