I got accepted to Notre Dame as a Neuroscience and Behavior major for premed… How good is the premed program at ND? Are there a lot of research opportunities available?
Bump?
Bump…? Anyone?
Calm down child, there are already a bunch of threads on this plus a bunch of info on ND’s website. Pre-med at ND is very good for getting into medical school, acceptance rate is like 80% or something ridiculous. I’m not gonna lie to you, there is a strong weeding-out process that helps keep that stat high.
I’m a non-science junior at ND, plenty of premed friends. They spend lots of time studying and stressing, the courseload is very rigorous. Neuroscience is new and it’s a pretty cool major, one of my best friends is doing it now. Most (can’t give you a percentage) science majors get the opportunity to start research pretty early on if they want. If you want to get into med school and you don’t mind sitting in the library studying for four years, ND is a good choice.
If you’re wondering if ND will be a good fit for you outside the classroom, see other threads. (and plenty of pre meds have social lives but in general you will have to make sacrifices)
I am a freshman at ND majoring in neuroscience. I am a freshman and am already doing research in a neurologically oriented psych lab. The pre med track here is fantastic. There are plenty of research opportunities and it is pretty easy to get involved in research here. The work load can be pretty stressful, but its a pretty good program.
Sorry to bring such an old post back up, but I figured this would make more sense than to start a new thread. @ndpg123 are you implying that it is harder to get in if I express interest in pre-med in my application? If so, would it be better to say I am undecided? Thanks
Your intended major has no bearing on your application, since all students are accepted as “Freshman year of studies”. You will decide your major at the end of your Freshman year. That said, your intention will matter, if accepted, as you will use that to determine your first year classes and direction. Don’t worry, at this point, it does not matter.
I have had two kids go to ND. One, a daughter, class of '11, who is a doctor now (just graduated med school in May of '15) and a son, a current junior chemical engineer. PM me if you have specific questions.
Actually it is not entirely true that your intended major has no bearing, as they limit the number of Mendoza intents they accept. Also, you enroll in a particular College (Mendoza, Science, A&L, Engineering) at the end of freshman year but don’t have to declare a major until the end of sophomore year. That being said, it appears your intended field as indicated on your application won’t have much if any bearing as you don’t appear to be applying to Mendoza.
It really sucks that they capped Mendoza.
