I have been accepted so far to tufts, uc berkeley, u michigan, and uva and plan on being pre-med (majoring in biomedical engineering). I have yet to visit tufts' campus, but from what I've heard from friends its very "me" and I would love it. I was wondering how the pre med is at Tufts versus the other schools I applied to.. Thanks!

Tufts is especially good when you consider its early acceptance program (evaluation for the med school after sophomore year) but Michigan is also strong in the sciences. Not very experienced with the other schools, though I have been to Charlottesville and was very doubtful about the chances I’d have to find internship opportunities or medical-related volunteer positions there.

You don’t want to go to Berkeley for pre-med. Your GPA will get destroyed.

Pick the school where you think you’d be happiest, because all of these schools offer fine pre-med curricula and you’ll do the best where you’re happiest.
Moreover, you should keep in mind that a high percentage of students who enter college as pre-meds don’t finish it that way, so that shouldn’t be the sole basis on which you choose anyway.
Tufts’ pre-med curriculum is great, by the way (as it is at most schools that have their own med schools).
Good luck!

thank you for the insight!

Im pre-med here, and if you want to ask specific questions feel free to PM me - I’d love to help.

acceptd i tried to pm you but your inbox is full and it won’t let me send :(

In terms of med school, Tufts also has an Early Assurance program you can apply to in your junior year here where you can apply to the Tufts Medical School in Boston for med school, and you won’t have to take the MCATs or stress about applying to grad schools senior year.

How have premed students found their experience to be at Tufts? Wondering what kids going through it now think of their decision to pursue premed at Tufts.

Anyone who can compare premed at Tufts tvs U of Miami in Florida?

Pre-med at Tufts was definitely pretty darned difficult. I particularly found Chem and Orgo (we might have different professors now, I took these classes 5-6 years ago) to be really tricky.
However, like anything else in life, you just need a lot of motivation, a lot of commitment, and a lot of discipline. The vast majority of pre-meds won’t be applying to med school- it’s just the nature of the beast. The difficulty of the courses will test your commitment to medicine, which is ultimately a good thing.

On the other hand, premed is just about the same anywhere, so you’ll really just want to keep your head above water, learn some great study habits (learning how to study well is maybe 80% of the battle) and keep your gpa as high as you can- pad it if you need to (many will tell you it’s a cop-out, but you’ll thank me later). When you apply to med school, you’ll be competing against people who had a way easier time of getting their high gpa’s. Ultimately you’re the victor in the sense that you’re likely better equipped to handle the med school workload, but it won’t feel that way when you’re applying. So keep your gpa as high as possible, and work your butt off when studying for the MCAT.

Oh, and definitely trust and listen to the premed committee people. Carol B-D is a fantastic resource and I know there are some new people there now as well who I’m sure are great. If you’re interested in specific med schools, the pre-med office should have a list of students and where they ended up- feel free to email them.

Finally, I think the appeal of going to a school like Tufts which has its own med school attached is the opportunity to work with some great faculty on research and such. It doesn’t hurt that we’re in Boston, too. Throughout undergrad I did research at MGH and Mass Eye & Ear which is a pretty cool experience. Take advantage of Tufts’ location and shadow, volunteer, and do research at the awesome hospitals downtown.
