^ 13 out of what... 150+ schools? That statistic only makes him look even worse

I am in no way putting down UCLA as a bad medical school. It is very good and accepts top students. The school is known worldwide and I applaud those who are in the program.

But there are very tip top people (students, parents, professionals) who still think UCLA is not good enough, compared to the more well known ones in the top 12 [I am impartial about this statement]. That's what my post was about, taking HYPS mentality/analogy to the medical school comparison.

But those irrational students/parents are usually ones that have either have minimal, if any, knowledge of medical schools (i.e. the types that don’t even know that there are two possible focuses of medical school, and that Harvard doesn’t even crack the top 10 in primary care ranking) or if they were professionals, are in no field remotely related to medicine. Again, in terms of medical school, the gaps in quality are quickly closed among ALL of the U.S. schools, and it’s not like the undergraduate institutions where there are huge discrepancies between the various schools. Heck, getting into any California medical school is a very significant feat…

To the OP, I would save your money and attend UTexas unless you had some burning desire to come out to California.

the texas system is awesome. 90% of the incoming class for each medical school in the state must be native texans or have established residency there. i wish there was something like that here in california

Okay, now I'm curious...

osteopathic vs allopathic..one gives you the MD, other gives you a DO

~1500 premeds first year (my observation)
~700 apply at the beginning of senior year (or junior year for those graduating in three years)
~350 make it in somewhere
<a href="http://career.ucla.edu/GraduateSchool&PreProfessionalServices/UCLAFourYrMedSchoolAdmissionsHistory.asp%5B/url%5D">http://career.ucla.edu/GraduateSchool&PreProfessionalServices/UCLAFourYrMedSchoolAdmissionsHistory.asp</a>
so of the original premed crowd ~20% will eventually go to med school
these are really rough estimates but you get the point. its hard

Also, Geffen is an amazing medical school. To say that ucla's med school is "not that great" or "second tier" is stupid and completely wrong. I personally know people who have chosen Geffen over UCSF and many ivy league med schools.

oh- i was thinking more along the lines of primary care vs research oriented, with some that have overlapping focuses

BoelterHall,

That may or may not be true, but the stats at UCLA tell us that UCLA is clearly on par with Stanford when it comes to the average admit -- 3.8 11.7Q. This also puts it on par with every major college of medicine EXCEPT for WUSTL, which is notoriously difficult to get into.

Outside of the CC.com/very intense academic circles, nobody looks at UCLA as second tier. The residencies obtained by the average UCLA med school grad are clearly on par with every other top program-- and that is ALL that matters.

Hell, all of this is pretty much moot anyway! We don't know the STEP 1 scores of UCLA, Harvard, etc. grads, so we can't really say much. I can only go by the residencies, and those are largely comparable.
