I was wondering: am I going to be required to take any history or government related courses if I choose a Pre-Med or Biology? I was curious about it since we have all these AP history courses like US, Euro, and the government courses. Will I have to take any of them while trying to get my Bachelor’s?
Whether you will need to take any history or government courses during college if you’re biology major will depend upon the policies of the specific college you attend.
Most colleges have what are called “general education” requirements that may include required classes in English/composition, humanities, foreign languages, social science etc.
BTW, pre-med is an intention. There is no such thing as a “pre med major” in college (unless you attend Penn State). A pre-med can actually major in any academic field and still go to med school so long as they have completed all the necessary pre-reqs required by medical schools. (Bio, gen chem, ochem, biochem, physics, English, calc, stats, psych and sociology)
Most places you will have to take gen eds. I’m a pre-med bio major and at my school I had to take 2 semester english, 2 semesters history, 2 semesters theology, 2 semesters philosophy, 2 semesters social sciences, and a language through an intermediate level. But a) my university has some of the most gen-eds of any college I’ve ever heard of and b) you can use AP credits and/or placement testing (for languages) to get out of certain requirements at my school.
Going into college, as a “science person” I thought I would find these classes annoying. However, looking back, I’m soooooo glad I had to take them. Really gives you more perspective and gives you the feeling that you are getting a more well-rounded education. Not to mention, it’s sometimes nice during finals week to have a class that isn’t giving a hard-core science test for the final and instead is maybe giving an essay to mix it up.
