I'll be studying pre-med at Wustl this fall and I was was looking for some help with course selection. I took a look at the required courses for my biology major. First year I'm certain I'll have to take biol 2960 and 2970 along with chem 111a and 112a. I'll also use my AP credit to skip the calcs and take Calc 3 and diff eq. I think this leaves me with three more classes to select each semester. Is physics something you usually take freshman year? Also, I want to get a spanish minor eventually and want to take a spanish class. What else am I supposed to take?

P.S. I noticed that there is an online registration option on the webstac and was wondering if people generally used that. I'm hoping that's not the case and that I won't be stuck with a poor choice of classes.

I’m a '15er as well and I’m not pre-med… but about registration, you only have to worry about online registration if you’re not in ArtSci (I can’t tell you much more since I am in ArtSci, but I suggest you join the 2015 Facebook group because there are some upperclassmen in the group and some other freshmen who probably know a bit about registration).

Bio 2960 starts second semester, so most premeds take chem, calc 2 or 3, physics, and chem lab (extra two credits) in addition to a class pertaining to their area of study, such as an intro engineering class, or in your case, spanish. Second semester you replace this elective with bio, which gives you ~17 credits a semester, which is more than enough. Its definitely possible to spread these classes out, but many people do try and get these general education courses out of the way so they can start taking more electives.

All registration is done online. I’m not sure what you’re referring to as stuck with a poor choice of classes. As you get more credits, you get to register earlier i.e. seniors register before juniors, etc. Freshmen year it’s typically a raffle of when you get to register for fall classes…that does mean you can have bad section times or not your first choice classes, but it’s no different at any othr college.

I believe rainbowrose is referring to ArtSci weekend and not the school which does use online registration.

Freshmen year you’ll need to take Writing 1 too so

Fall:
Calc 3 (3)
Chem + Lab (5)
Physics 117/97 (4)
Dif EQ (3) / Writing 1 (3)

That’s 15 units, if you’re assigned to Writing 1 first semester you should drop Dif Eq till Spring semester.

Spring:
Chem + Lab (5)
Bio 2960 (4)
Physics 118/98 (4)
Dif EQ (3) / Writing 1 (3)

Which is 16 units. You’ll be best waiting with Spanish until your sophomore year. I’d highly recommend not taking an additional class either semester – 18 units is a lot, especially for a freshman.

If you were Engineering you’d skip Writing 1 and take a class of your choice instead (probably an intro engineering class as DJEureka mentioned, but it seems you aren’t).

Is Dif EQ needed for premed? I’m not premed so I’m not sure. If it’s not needed you might take Spanish instead. Otherwise (I’ve taken it), it’s not a bad class to take but if not needed, I’d probably avoi it.

Thanks so much for the input. With regards to online registration, I found out that it only applies to upperclassmen and that I have to apply during regular freshman orientation. Also, I’ve taken AP Chem, AP Bio, Calc 3 and Diff Eq in high school so I think I’ll ask my advisor if it wouldn’t be overkill taking the extra Spanish course and take his/her opinion into consideration.

//All registration is done online.// Not art-sci though?

Yes, artsci registration is done online. I believe all undergrads can only register online (not 100% sure about art though).

The two are not mutually exclusive…
“regular freshman orientation” registration is done online as well.

Freshman artsci students can only register at artsci weekend or at the bear beginnings orientation.
