Hey guys, I'm a rising senior from a top public school in the south. The high school I go to is considered one of the most rigorous in the state and has been named a blue ribbon school a few years in a row. I wanted to know how competitive the pre-med/dent classes are at UMD. My stats:
GPA: 3.8 uw
ACT: 29
Class rank: top 10%
I have SEVERAL leadership positions and ECs which include sports, cultural and language clubs, community service, biology TA, and student ambassador. (There are more.) I have taken college level classes for 3 years. These are not college-prep classes, but are the actually college courses one would take at a university, such as ENG110, BIO101, CL CHEM II, etc.
I would like to know what my chances of admittance are and how the pre-med classes are. Are they cutthroat and competitive? I plan on being a Psychology major. I made the mistake of going to a ridiculously competitive school once, but I do not wish to make that mistake again. I know that you need the best grades possible for medical/dental school.

I know this might not answer you question specifically, but pre-med/predental are advising tracks at umd. that means that there aren’t specific pre-med/predental labeled classes at umd. rather, theres a list of course requirements that will fulfill med/dental school prerequisites. which means that you don’t have to be on a pre med/dental track to take these classes. hpoe this made sense to you…sorry if it wa sa little confusing.

if you’re interested, you can look up the class requirements and curriculum on the UMD website. I don’t think you have to worry about competition though. just do your best (and by the looks of your stats you’re more than prepared) and you should be fine ^_^

also regarding acceptance chances, your gpa and test scores seem on par with everyone else, even above average. your ECs, especially leadership and your college classes (assuming you have good grades) will definately give you an edge. My guess is that you’ll very likely be admitted, and if you’re lucky might even get into honors or scholars ^_^

Oh yeah, I guess I did not phrase it correctly. I know you have to take 1 year of biology with lab, 1 year of general chemistry with lab, 1 year of organic chemistry with lab, 1 year of physics with lab, calculus, and English. I was just wondering how difficult these general requirement classes would be and how competitive the students are. Thanks!
