Pre-med reqs over the summer

I know fufilling pre-med reqs over the summer is not reccomended. Is this the same for all BCPM courses as well? Can I take a class such as Genetics or Anatomy over the summer?

try emailing a few med schools…

bump! anyone know?

I plan on taking Bio II over the summer because the professor I wanted only taught Bio I during the Spring Semester. My pre-med advisor said it should be fine since it’s only one req.

The most important thing is why. Why are you taking the summer course? Can’t find other things to do? Not a good reason. Can’t handle that many science courses during the year? Not a good reason. Need it to fulfill your major but want to go abroad so you have to take it in the summer? Probably a good reason. If you have a good reason, it’s ok.

I agree with the above post that it really depends on the reason. For me I love learning and the joy I get out of learning, taking summer classes not only helps me get summer credit but taking classes are just fun. They say kids lose a ton of information when they go on summer vacation so I don’t think they are a bad thing.

Right now though I have to take summer chemistry courses so that I can get into medical school within a decent time range. I’m a post-bacc student and if I don’t take chem now then I can’t take orgo in the fall and then I can’t take the MCAT next May which means no medical school until 2015 and I really can get into the 2014 cycle. I’ve already graduated so I don’t have filler classes that would justify me being in school longer so I’m on a tighter schedule that requires me to take summer classes.

I thought that they only cared that your prereqs (gen chem, phsycis, orgo, bio, english, math) are during the school year.

They really don’t prefer classes like anatomy or genetics over the summer?

Correct. I imagine they prefer you do something other than class since that’s what you do the other 75% of the year. It’s much easier to volunteer or do research or shadow or tons of other things when you don’t have class in the way.

Alright. I’ll try and fit it in my schedule
