pre-med, research, advisers

how is pre-med advising at Berkeley? i'm trying to decide between Berkeley and some private schools, and one of the things leaning me towards a private school is my assumption that a large public school like Berkeley probably does not provide the comfort of great personal, one-on-one advising. i know everyone gets a faculty adviser, but i've been hearing that many of them don't help much. can any current student share any experiences with your adviser, if he/she helped you get research opportunities, etc.? some general thoughts on pre-med at Berkeley would also be nice :) thanks!
