i read on a thread somewhere that you can't write that u shadowed a doctor in ur resume under the extra activities bit because u don't really help out.. but isnt it an extra thing that u did anyway?

then what do you put there?? i am definitely going to shadow to make sure that a doctor is what i really want to be.. but i want to do more..
im currently on a gap year, just finished high school..ive got good grades and extras from during school, but i want to have a stronger resume, but i dunno what to do?

if its volunteering, what sort of volunteering is there for a high school graduate that'll help me get into pre-med?

does it HAVE to be medical related ? (okay, stupid question, but i am looking into volunteering for wildlife conservation too)

please be nice xD
thanks :)

kobe257,
My son is a Junior in a premed.
A few things you want to keep in mind. There is not “premed” degree, simply premed requirements. Certain classes that you need to take in college to qualify for medical school. You get your degree in whatever field you want. Most med school students do get science related degrees, but that isn’t required. Your goal right now is to get into college. What you did in hs will only help you getting into college and possibly scholarships.
By taking a gap year between hs & you will be able to start working on things that will help you get into med school. My son’s premed advisor at the university mentioned that while there are many volunteer options that aren’t related to medicine, that he should spend his time working in a medical field and working with people since that’s what a doctor does. That kind of volunteering is much more important to your med school application. The advice was directed at a fulltime student taking a heavy biochem/premed cirriculum, so if you are taking a year off, you might have time to pursue wildlife conservation, but make sure you do medical and people related volunteering or work too.
