Pre-med/University of Chicago

What's Pre-med life like at UChicago? How do they do in their med school admissions? Is it a solid schools for pre-med combined with another major...like economics?

They certainly send many students to medical school. What specifically is your interest in their program?

Is U of chicago grade deflated?

i believe it is known for being more on the grade-deflated side, though i think some adcoms may take this into account...it's still a great school, i might have gone there if it wasn't so darned expensive :(
also UChicago is EXCELLENT in economics.

If you want to do pre-med here, keep in mind that you also have to satisfy a very heavy reading and writing based core curriculum. It's not impossible, but some might feel like they are doing double-duty.

The research and work opportunities here are outstanding. With a hospital on campus and a large team of researchers in biology and such, you'll be able to get research experience if you want it.

I will be attending Chicago in the fall and am a bit worried about the large core requirements. Hopefully these classes don't get in the way of those important, pre-mcat courses we should have under our belts before taking the test.

Again, it's a popular major here as elsewhere, so it's not impossible. Also keep in mind that pre-med classes are more or less standardized across colleges-- with college students nationwide taking MCATs and such, the classes are at similar levels of difficulty. You can't "hide" from pre-med at other schools; you can't hide from anything at Chicago.

I also don't know how much you are set on pre-med (either you, notsomuch, or you, OP). A lot of people switch around and decide to drop pre-med altogether. Some decide to major in something else (anthro, Russian studies, English, etc.) while doing pre-med requirements.

Actually, my hope was to major in Econ and fulfill pre-med reqs on the side. I guess my concern is trying to complete 3 different courses of study - econ, core and pre-med reqs! Are there any specific stats on Chicago med school admissions?

The premed office there does have specific statistics which they do not release to the public.

Medical schools also will compare candiates from the same school so grade deflation/inflation effects are less important. Also, while it may not be applied in a formulistic way, certain applicants from schools which are known for lower median GPAs, will be noted as such when compared with those from other schools during the final selection. Finally, many universities and colleges will provide median grades of key pre-medical courses or of their pre-med applicants to medical schools as part of the pre-med committee package.
