Hello,
I am currently trying to decide between UT Austin and UW Madison (I’ve been accepted into both). I am currently living Wisconsin, so I would be an out-of-state student at UT Austin.
I have visited both universities and have grown to like them both. Also, I feel like they are quite similar universities (based on academics or student activities).
I am a pre-med student. I am planning on majoring in neuroscience (at UT Austin) or neurobiology (at UW Madison).
I am wary of the very cold temperatures in Madison and the very hot temperatures in Austin.
My parents are planning to move to Texas in the upcoming years to join my extended family who already lives in Texas. Therefore, I’d like to end up in Texas eventually (probably for medical school).
I’m not sure which school would provide a better pre-medical experience for me. Also, the tuition cost differences is a factor. If I want to pursue medical school in Texas, will it be better for me to just move there now for my undergrad?
Any advice would be great, thank you.
This is easy. Save the $20k per year.
When do your parents move to Texas? Will you be able to be considered instate once they move? Email financial aid and ask them what process you’ll have to go through to be considered instate once your parents have moved back with your relatives w and email UW to ask whether you’ll still be considered instate once your family has moved to Texas.
When you apply to med school, you will apply nationwide. If you are fortunate enough to have more than one acceptance, you will be able to make a choice based on location, instructional emphasis, cost, etc. Most students just go to the one place that accepted them. Maybe Texas. Maybe North Dakota.
Don’t worry yet about where you ight be accepted to med school. Find out the answers to the questions MYOS1634 has posed. Where your parents live will determine your state of residence untilyou finish your bachelors degree.
Silly to pay OOS for UT. What a total waste. I doubt that UT will let you change from OOS to IS rates after your parents’ move…unless it’s a military move. Why are your parents moving?
Once you’re almost a rising senior at Wisconsin and you still will get instate rates for senior year, get a Texas license and register to vote there using your parents’ new texas home as your address. (So you would do this probably towards the end of junior year or at the end of junior year…at a time that wouldn’t hurt your instate Wisconsin rates for senior year.) Then apply to texas meds as an instate student thru your parents’ residency.
I agree with the above…save the money, get perfect grades and come to Texas for med school. Both great schools and will prepare you for the rigors of med school.
OP needs to verify whether s/he will still be considered instate for Wisconsin after their parents mov and whether Texas would consider them instate if they’re considered OOS freshman year.
The choice should be the university where the 4 years cost the least and it’s not clear at this point.
Texas residency rules:
For undergraduate: https://admissions.utexas.edu/residency#fndtn-residency-establishing-domicile-requirements
For medical school: https://www.tmdsas.com/medical/residency.html
Note that Texas medical schools are relatively inexpensive as medical schools go for Texas residents.
For Wisconsin, be sure to read the rules relating to the situation of your parents leaving the state:
