Trying to help a friend with school suggestions...
Her daughter wants to major in English, but take pre-med classes and then go on to med school. She has great stats and would be a competitive applicant almost anywhere. She is in-state Virginia, but likely would qualify for financial aid elsewhere (and finances are an issue). For now, though, she's just trying to hone in on schools that she could do the English major with pre-med courses. Suggestions?

A pre-med student can major in any field of study. If the major is not in the sciences, it may take careful scheduling, but it is entirely possible to be an English major pre-med.

She should look for colleges/universities with good English departments and good financial aid. Then she can sort through that list to find the ones with better med-school placement.

Good luck!

D1 is a premed English major. As hm1 said, a premed can major in anything, they just have to take a set of courses necessary for applying to Med Schools.

If you haven’t already, go to the Pre-Med Topics forum, there are posters there with much experience, including some currently in Med School. They tend not to recommend looking at Med school placement as a good indicator of where to go for UG because the criteria used by different schools varies widely, making the comparison unreliable.

Thank you both…good advice. I will check the pre-med topics board. She’s not looking beyond undergrad at this point; but she was hoping to get a few suggestions of specific schools to look at. Entomom, do you mind sharing where your daughter goes to school? Thanks!
